search warrant for an ak-47. and when they got here, they encountered cher's dog. kate snow (voiceover): jack, the doberman who adored cher, was already at bill's place. no one knew exactly how he got there, but the dog was anxious, pacing nervously. jackie was really animated and agitated and just kept circling and running up into the jungle. and the dog would come down and, like, bark at the people that were doing the search and then run up the hill. and it-- follow me, guys. and the dog led them up there-- this hill right here. right here, and went up into the back of the property. kate snow (voiceover): jack bounded up and down the hill until police followed him. and there, they found something shocking-- a mound of disturbed dirt. they began to dig. cher's husband, keith, waited at the bottom of the hill. the police went up with shovels, and then they came down about two hours later and said, we need you to come up and take a look. kate snow (voiceover): in a shallow grave, hidden under a mound of garbage, the police made a horrible discovery-- the body of cher hughes. she had been shot once in the back of the head. i imagine that was one of the hardest days of your life. yeah, it sure is. i mean, no one should ever see someone they cared about look like that. kate snow (voiceover): now keith finally understood why jack kept swimming to bill's place. keith werle: he'd swim that mile back and just stay right there. he was staying true to mommy. kate snow (voiceover): but the horror wasn't over. as police continued searching bill's property, they discovered another mound of disturbed dirt, another shallow grave. and there, buried beneath more rubble, the body of bi icelar, the other missing american. don winner: when they found the bodies, that's when they realize that it's not just people with suspicions and making accusations. it's really happening. kate snow (voiceover): keith watched as authorities raided bill's home. he says they found evidence of the ghastly crimes-- bo's id, cher's passport, her purse, and her cell phone, used to send those text messages saying cher had simply gone for a sail. and there was more-- nazi memorabilia, strange satanic signs, jewelry that may have belonged to the victims, and the most gruesome discovery-- about a dozen gold teeth. he lived with these things. he lived with corpses and people's personal effects around him. kate snow (voiceover): the expats in bocas were in turmoil. two of their friends were dead, their bodies found in the backyard of a man they once trusted, wild bill cortez. keith werle: to know that he lived next to me for 2 and 1/2 years and i had him in my home, i invited him to dinner, we did the social neighbor thing with him, and he shot my wife. it's just inconceivable. kate snow (voiceover): authorities launched a search for bill and his wife, who they also suspected was involved, but it was too late. they had already fled. this is now a major manhunt. right, i knew he was probably out of the country already, that he was on the flight. so the most important thing at that point was to get his picture out there on every television screen, on every newspaper cover, on every computer monitor. it's got to get out there in a big way to get him caught. kate snow (voiceover): by then, wild bill and his wife jane were in costa rica. someone recognized them there and contacted the police. as the search intensified, bill and jane made a desperate attempt to cross into nicaragua by boat, but they were stopped by soldiers at a checkpoint. they got the drop on them with machine guns and basically said, halt or die, and he stopped. he gave himself up. at the end of the line. that was the first time he had ever had handcuffs on in his life. kate snow (voiceover): it was also the first time anyone on the island heard wild bill's real name. my name is william dathan holbert. kate snow (voiceover): fun-loving bocas del toro bartender wild bill cortez was, in fact, william dathan holbert, a 30-year-old who'd been on the run from american authorities since 2006. as the islanders absorbed the headlines of a killer among them, they discovered that wild bill had a long and notorious past that stretched nearly 2,000 miles from the whitee mountains of north carolina. that's where he grew up, going by his middle name, dathan. he played high school football, married his sweetheart, had three kids, and worked as a landscaper. his old boss at a gym, kevin hoover, liked dathan until dathan had an affair with one of his employees and, hoover says, embezzled $25,000 from the gym's accounts. he had told me he had thought that was part of his pay, his package. and i said, no, dathan, it's not part of your package. kate snow (voiceover): and that was just the beginning. dathan left the job and his wife. he ran off with laura michelle reese, who'd later be known as jane cortez in bocas. in 2005, police say dathan started in on real estate scams. he sold a home that wasn't his for $200,000. police charged him with obtaining property under false pretenses. by the time the owner realized what had happened, dathan was on the run. that landed him on the television program, "america's most wanted." somewhere along the line, police say

white house says, posting t those photographs. right. good morning to you. we just got them the new white house press secretary posting them on social media as well, saying deportations have begun. now the president has promised millions of people will be rounded up. the photographs show just a few dozen people boarding, boarding, rather, a u.s. air force cargo plane, she says, quote, deportation flights have begun. president trump sending a clear and strong message to the entire world. if you illegally enter the united states, you will face severe consequences. a federal court in seattle also sending a very strong message that donald trump's order changing the definition of birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. the federal judge in the case, appointed by ronald reagan, has put a temporary stop to the implementation so the two sides can argue their case. the case brought by the state of california and a dozen other states, the judge says. i've been on the bench for over four decades. i can't remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one. this is. but to hear the judge from the bench say that in his 40 years as a judge, he has never seen something so blatantly unconstitutional, sets the tone for the seriousness of this effort. reaction from democratic leadership there. democrats also reacting strongly to trump's pardoning of people who attacked police officers at the capitol on january 6th, donald trump didn't care ait about safer communities when he released those who were convicted of beating the out of police officers. so don't come to us and talk about security and safer communities when you do that. the founder of the right wing oath keepers, who once said his only regret was capital protesters didn't bring rifles, toured the capitol yesterday and said this about police officers. just because somebody puts on a uniform doesn't make them a good person. it doesn't mean that every action that they do is correct. i believe that the i believe that law enforcement that day, i believe they started a lot of the violence that happened. president trump made a virtual address to the world economic forum in davos, where he encouraged manufacturers to bring their factories to america. he said he would demand lower interest rates as well, and then praised crown prince mohammed bin salman of saudi arabia. the united states, says mbs, as he's known, ordered the murder of washington post columnist jamal khashoggi. it's also reported today in the papers that saudi arabia will be investing at least $600 billion in america. but i'll be asking the crown prince, who's a fantastic guy, to round it out to around 1 trillion. president biden called mbs a pariah after the murder, though. as you see, biden met with the prince a few years later, even fist bumped him. khashoggi went to the saudi arabia embassy in turkey. this is video camera of it to get a marriage license. he was murdered and decapitated inside the embassy, his body cut into pieces by saudis. back here at home, fox anchor pete hegseth could get the nomination he's looking for. as soon as today. president trump says he'll make a good secretary of defense. republican led committee agreed. with the exception of susan collins from maine, lisa murkowski from alaska. and we do expect president trump here in california later today in los angeles to inspect fire damage. our kris sanchez has full coverage of that, marcus. coming up shortly. all right, scott, thank you. well, there are some new video showing the moment a vandal takes aim at a cybertruck on the peninsula. so the owner of that vehicle is sure she knows why her truck was targeted. she says she believes it's purely political. today in the bay's bob redell is live outside the tesla factory in fremont. and bob, first of all, we need to explain to viewers what tesla maybe has to do with it. correct. good morning to you, marcus and laura. the woman who owns the cybertruck says she doesn't believe that she was a target of this vandalism, that whoever did this, she believes, was trying to send a message about elon musk, whose company tesla builds those cybertrucks. this happened wednesday night in downtown redwood city. a tesla car camera recorded a man spray painting the word nazi on the side of a cybertruck that happened to be parked right in front of that car. we spoke with amanda lopez. lara, who is the owner of that cybertruck. she was out for dinner wh the vandalism happened and immediately reported the crime to redwood city police, who is now investigating. lopez lara believes that she again was not the target, but believes the vandal was sending the message about elon musk, who made a questionable hand gesture earlier in the week that loed like a nazi salute. with all the social media and the news circulating with, you know, telling him, you know, accusing him of it being related to, you know, hitler andll that, i don't think it's a coincidence. it was just really disappointing and disheartening that, you know, i went to berkeley myself, and i fully understand standing up for what's right. but this isn't doing that isn't working towards that purpose. lopez lara points out to us that she herself comes from a family of migrant farm workers. her fiance is born and raised in the bay area with their families from mexico and el salvador. she says buying the cybertruck had nothing to do with political ideology, ideology, ideology or anything like that. it was, quote, just a decision on a car. now, you may remember on monday, on inauguration day, musk was seen on stage at capital one arena in dc, making a hand gesture which many sayay is reminiscent of a nazi salute. some have since accused him of knowingly performing a nazi salute, while others, including the anti-defamation league, have defended him, saying it was just a, quote, awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, unquote. musk has since joked and tried to make light of the situation after his move sparked a firestorm on social media. reporting live here in fremont outside the tesla factory. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. the family of an oakland woman believed to have been murdered three years ago is expressing outrage after a new decision from prosecutors. the contra costa county da's office announced they will not seek charges against the mother of the man investigators believe killed her. investigators say alexis gabe's boyfriend, curtis jones, killed gabe and it was believed he dumped her body three years ago in amador county. he left the area, and washington authorities shot and killed him while trying to arrest him for therime. with the statute of limitations approaching for his mother, prosecutors say there's insufficient evidence to successfully prove her guilt in being an accomplice. gabe's family says they're disappointed with that decision. it was very disappointing. definitely. our attorney, dara, worked really hard on, on on her presentation and we had a substantial amount of evidence that she presented. gabe's family is organizing a remembrance event for sunday, the day they believe jones murdered her. they're calling it a day of kindness or a day of compassion. asking everyone to perfm acts of kindness to pay their respects. today, people in half moon bay will remember the victims of the mass shooting at the mushroom farms. it's been two years since the deadliest county. there will be ateo heartfelt two year remembrance ceremony to honor the victims and survivors. a press conference at 11:00 this morning. and a vigil tonight at six. this comes as the city is planning for a permanent memorial in downtown and displaced artists renderings of the potential designs. now, we actually spoke with one of the survivors, pedro romero, who says that he shared a converted shipping container with his brother jose, who died in that shooting. pedro underwent three surgeries and has not been able return to work. but he says living without his brother jose haseen by far the most difficult thing. that's what hurts the most, is that my brother is no longer with me. in a pending lawsuit filed last year. pedro's attorney argues the two brothers former employer failed to protect them and their working living conditions on that property. the complaint also claims thathere was a history of violent incidents at the farm. california terra garden did not immediately respond to the request for a comment on that lawsuit. police in san mateo are launching a concentrated new effort to crack down on crime. the department is introducing a new program it calls business watch. it's now encouraging downtown businesses to band together in an effort to reduce crime and foster stronger ties between police and downtown businesses and the people who visit there. the plan envisions new partnerships in areas like education, training and an integrated security camera network. 541 this morning, as we take a live look at this beautiful shot here in downtown san jose. cinthia pimentel has a look at that forecast for us. beautiful sites, cold temperatures. yeah. and the sites will continue up there in napa with the lighted art festival tonight. and it runs through about the middle of february. so you have a chance to check that out tonight. we bring our coats because we dip down into the 40s as we go on and track some incoming clouds as well for our friday. san jose lunar new year celebration tomorrow and on sunday at the grand century mall, you'll notice a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures much cooler than they have been in recent weeks. with all of that sunshine. things are going to change this weekend. if you can't make it to san jose, but you still want to celebrate, there's another one in millbrae, so mid bay. that one is on broadway. that one is also going to be met with a mix of sun and clouds and mid 50s there. for the forecasted highs you could end it tomorrow night. warriors taking on the lakers. there we are looking at temperatures in the city coming down into the low 50s. so definitely bring all of the warmer. warriors gear as you go out and have a fun time. let's go to one of my favorite places in the world, carmel. what a nice day to get away. today we are looking at temperatures in the low 60s, but then maybe some rain showers for the weekend. but that could still be cozy if you just go into a cafe and sit down and enjoy that light rainfall up into the sierra we go, today is your best bet to get up there because things are going to change for the weekend. we are looking at 1 to 2in of some fresh powder up there, so not a complete whiteout, but definitely could make the road situation a bit tricky. so if you are headed that way, practice putting on the chains today and carry them with you just in case things change. we'll be tracking more of the snow and rain chances here in the bay area in aew minutes. but mike, you also have a weekend forecast. yes, mike's version over here, the bay bridge. it's friday, so we'll see a later start to those metering lights. saw the bill happen. it's subtle. nothing major right there and no problems. getting there on the roadway. gave you typical brake tapper right around merritt island. a little more focus now out of vallejo and that's about it. look at this. highway four. no problems. so contra costa county showing that lighter friday commute. we'll have roadwork 101 into sausalito. watch overnight work tonight. that's one of your weekend warnings. good times last night for the warriors at chase center. good times tonight if you're heading to toms concert over there at 730. love that comedian. don't love traffic, so avoid the area if you don't need to be around that parking lot. we still have that one incident working around sfo the exit from north 101. it's open. there's just activity for an earlier crash there. north 101 is starting to show a little slowing for this friday. as we look toward this. 101 here is just fine. just picking up the volume right on schedule. watch those exits from 101 through san mateo county overnight. so over the weekend there may be work as they're working on retaining rails through whipple and hillsdale. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. you know how you're always looking for that perfect parking spot? well, unsanctioned. no parking curbs are popping up in san francisco just ahead on today in the bay. the reason officials believe it keeps on happening. we're we'll talk about the full forecast in a few minutes. and it is friday so it's a lighter traffic a little later build for the commute looking at 680 approaching 24 with these headlights through walnut creek. you're at speed no problem there coming through concord, pleasant hill, walnut creek. we'll see how things are building up closer to the bay bridge. it's about time. we should see those metering lights. we'll check on that coming up. well, if parking in san francisco wasn't vexing enough already, some people are now apparently taking matters into their own hands and adding to the confusion. they're painting certain curbside red without permission. that falls under the new day lighting law. now that law took effect january 1st. it bans cars from parking within 20ft of a marked or unmarked crosswalk. people in the richmond district say someone recently extended red paint on the curb well past 20ft, even stenciling a transit agency logo to make it look legit. mta is now trying to remind everyone penalties for parking and day lighting zones will not be enforced until march. crews are also trying to repaint those curbs gray again. 549 right now, pandemonium is in full swing for seemingly everyone in the d.c. area, and today, the two pandas will be making their debut. we have a live look. we've been looking behind the scenes of panda cam this morning. take a look. creatures been crawling around scratching on some trees. the smithsonian national zoo welcomed the pair of three year old giant pandas, bo lee and xin bao, in october, almost a year since the zoo's last three pandas left back for china. but the pandas made their official public debut when the zoo opened about 40 minutes ago. the zoo relaunched giant panda cam so that people can see what they're doing in their little enclosure. the giant pandas assistant curator says watching the pandas grow makes coming to work special. it's been amazing to see the kind of things that we've been able to do with pandas. they're amazing animals, and every day they're doing something adorable. and it makes coming to work every day pretty special. wow, what a cool job. that's your job to watch pandas grow. you can watch the full story on today's show at 7:00 this morning. see how the zoo prepared for the pandas big public debut today. it's coming up right after today in the bay. still hopeful we can get some here in california as well. fingers crossed. well, this weekend it's your chance to take a ride on the wild side. all while supporting a good cause. yeah. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us this morning over at sonoma raceway. and, ginger, i understand you're cruising into the weekend with a lot of fun happening today over there. you feel the need for speed. i feel the need for speed. well, not just yet, because i'm still getting warmed up. you know, like it's a cold morning out here. we got to warm up. we got to be safe about it. so we're going to get out there when the. when the sun comes up, hopefully in the in the next hour. but this is kind of like a different visit here at the raceway because typically when we when we come and we visit, we talk about other cars getting on the track. they have a need for speed, but this time we're talking about how you can take your own car and feel and fulfill that need. we're talking to courtney kaiser, who is the director for the sonoma chapter of speedway children's charities. and courtney, this is this sounds like a really exciting thing for us normal folk here who go, you know, the regular 65 miles an hour, we can actually take your car out there. how does that work? yeah. so anyone this is one of the only opportunities that we have all year where we're able to invite our race fans, invite car enthusiasts, invite anyone with a safe, street level legal vehicle to come out and drive the racetrack. so you get to experience the same course that nascar drivers drive in a safe, comfortable environment. but it's also really, really fun. really? i mean, you're just telling me about the track because obviously we're not on the track right now. it's a little bit dark, but there are some tight turns. there are some changes in elevation. so this is like taking possibly like a video game, but then also being in your own car and feeling what it really feels like. yeah, absolutely. it's such a unique course. it's one of the most unique courses in the country, and we have hairpin turns, we have esses, we have ups, we have downs, we have straightaways where you get to go a little bit faster. and so it's a really unique experience. great. well we got to talk about the cause that's behind this. talk to us about where and who benefits from from the driving for a cause this weekend. yeah. so all proceeds from this weekend go towards speedway children's charities. we are the charitable arm of sonoma raceway, and all funds support children and families in need right here in sonoma county. so we have over 40 nonprofit partners, amazing nonprofit partners here in sonoma that we are able to distribute those funds to, to support. all right. okay, courtney. well, we're going to try. i only know of hairpins in my hair, but we'll see how we actually do when we get the wheels in that hair hairpin point of the track. all right. all right, guys, well, we'll wait for that in the next hour. you'll see if lightning mcqueen comes out or not. i don't really know, but all i know is be safe, because we're going to be going up the track. i know we have our order. come out in minivans. yeah. i'm going to give an early traffic alert for the sonoma race. that's what i was thinking. that's exactly what i was thinking. it's bad if there when we do have events like that. but fun. and this weekend we're also going to be tracking fun, at least weather wise. for me right now out there in dublin, it is a chilly start. so people in their cars cranking up the heaters as we start this morning with some upper 30s there in the tri-valley, you'll notice more of those clouds returning today. much cooler temperatures out there in the east bay. we're going to keep it in those low 60s for concord at 62, upper 60s for san jose. cool in the city today at 59 and 62. up there in napa, those high clouds come around, not bringing any rain just yet, but we get on into saturday and there's that counterclockwise activity starting to ramp up, some spotty showers for the south bay into the afternoon and up into the north bay as well. so really it's hit or miss, but at times when it does hit, it could bring some thunderstorm chances embedded in that as well. we look at that white spot right there through the south bay range, and maybe up into parts of lake county. could be seeing a light dusting of snow. so that's what we could wake up to on sunday morning. we're going to keep that that convection going and traveling south into southern california, where they're going to get some much needed fire relief and also some mountain snow. so suppressing the fire concerns for now and also bettering that air quality for them, they've been struggling all month long, and that shower is moving down as we go on into the state. that's not going to be the only rain chances, though. we go on and take a look at the pacific starting to get quite active as we go on into the middle to late part of next week. so that could bring some more rain chances here. as we say goodbye to january and finally get february started. it's been a long month. san francisco and the peninsula. we will see cooler temperatures into the weekend. breezy at times with those spotty showers, clearing it ou

white house on truth social, and what he says when he is side by side with governor newsom, who the white house did not know until they were flying to l.a. that he was going to be there waiting on the tarmac to greet him. >> it is. that is a fascinating detail, nick, what more can you tell us about president trump's tour of the devastated areas? >> you know, anderson, if you looked at this tour in isolation, you would think it was a very standard presidential tour of a disaster zone. but then, of course. secretary was again calling the governor new scum and saying that, you know, he'd done great harm to the people of his state. and, you know, governor newsom, aides have been telling us over the past few days that they feel like they've been fighting two wars, you know, one against the fire and one against the deluge of bs they say that's coming from the president and many other people. what is clear from president trump's demeanor is he is clearly moved by having actually seen what you and i saw here as the fires happened and the aftermath, you know, he mentioned some of the chimneys are even down. melania trump, the first lady, of course, is with him. they had a walk and talk with people in the palisades. one of those people was heard to say, you know, we feel let down by local leadership. and, you know, in this meeting now, you know, the president is sitting in front of a banner that says, you know, we're in this together. he's surrounded by bipartisan lawmakers. i saw him shake the hand of chief crowley, the l.a. fire chief, who's come under some criticism. and it seemed to me that the president said to her, good job. so it's all very convivial, all very supportive. he's talking about commiserating now and coming back to celebrate. but then, of course, the president went into his idea of, as you just laid out, that, you know, the water from up north should be coming down. and president trump said he's going to sign an executive order to make sure that happens. so right now, they're having a bipartisan meeting. brad sherman, who's a local congressman. one of the first things he asked was, you know, mr. president, you're you like a tariff. how about dropping tariffs on building materials? there was also talk about trying to shorten the permit period. so it all seems like all these levels of government are cooperating. but then we know what's been going on in the background, particularly between the president and the governor. so it's difficult to sort of square. >> nick, nick, let me ask you about this 2019 proposal, which is what the president keeps talking about, letting the water flow. my understanding is that was a proposal to kind of get water from the north to farmers in south of of california, not necessarily feeding los angeles county itself. is that right? >> correct. so the central valley, which is sort of breadbasket of california, that's where there was a lot of push to get the water to go. it all. tell me this smelt water from the north issue and the absolute problem that they had with the hydrants here in the palisades, that those two issues are entirely separate, that the issue here in the palisades was not that they didn't have enough water. you know, coming from the north, it was that the municipal water system here, like pretty much everywhere else on earth, was just not equipped to deal with an inferno like we saw here. and, you know, it's interesting, anderson, this house behind me, the lady who used to live in this house, stopped by and we chatted for a good half hour, and she said to me, stop making this political. stop making this about, you know, newsom versus trump. but unfortunately, over the past few days, it has been made political by the president and to a degree also by governor newsom. you know, this lady was saying there are people in need, you know, why can't we just get on with it? and that's the feeling, i think, of a lot of people in california stop making this political, for goodness sake. there are people in need. let's just work together, as we should, to make sure that people get all the help that they deserve. well. >> caitlin, it will also be interesting to see, given the sort of convivial nature of his side by side with governor newsom there, whether that actually and what he saw, whether that actually impacts, you know, his talk about conditioning this on, you know, this water from the north, which again, is supposed to largely go for farmers and voter i.d. law. >> but you know, what's fascinating, anderson, is that is what president trump said when he left the white house, that he was telling betsy klein at joint base andrews as he was about to get on the plane to go to north carolina and then go to l.a., that. yes, that he could see conditioning that aid on having voter i.d. and changing the water and whatnot. he's at this bipartisan briefing, and i was going to be watching this very closely, because there's a lot of democrats in the room who have been pretty critical of trump at times. brad sherman represents the 32nd district in california. he's a democrat, and he just president trump, to his credit, said anyone who wants to talk or give a statement can can please speak up. congressman brad sherman spoke up and was essentially making the case that he doesn't like what louisiana's abortion policy is. he doesn't agree with it. he thinks it's too restrictive. but he would never say to someone in louisiana who experienced a disaster that they could not get federal aid because of that. i think the phrase he was was, i'm not going to tell someone th

white house, a press briefing, the first one of this administration, the white house press secretary, was clear. she said that the medicare, social security and funds directly impacting people would not be included. however, left in the gray area is a lot of that federal money that is sent through the states on to people. so there is much confusion over the medicaid program. for example, the state portals were offline. it is unclear if those will come back online, but karoline leavitt, the new press secretary, explained the president's actions like this. >> this is not a blanket pause on federal assistance and grant programs from the trump. administration. individual assistance that includes i'm not naming everything that's included, but just to give you a few examples, social security benefits, medicare benefits, food stamps, welfare benefits, assistance that is going directly to individuals will not be impacted by this pause. >> so at that briefing a little earlier this afternoon, she was asked specifically about medicaid funding, and she said she would have to get back to reporters on that. jake. she did. she sent out a message just a short time ago, and she said, the white house is aware of the medicaid website portal outage. they hope it will be back online shortly. so the reality is this showed so much confusion simply because of the speed in which it came. there was, of course, that memo released last evening, and there was a lot of confusion that still exists. but the bigger point, the the bigger takeaway from this is the programs going forward. is the president going to fund things that are already in the pipeline, like the bipartisan infrastructure law, like the investment reduction act? they clearly are gearing up for a fight and watch for lawsuits to start this hour. >> jake and jeff, members of congress are saying they're not even sure that president trump has the legal standing to just pause programs that they have already appropriated, funds that have been signed into law for. >> they don't. certainly, democrats are saying that, and some republicans are saying it quietly as well. and, jake, this is going to be a legal test. perhaps this is th

white house had made clear was medicare and social security would not be affected. a question that came up twice inside this briefing room was whether or not medicaid would be affected. the white house, clearly sensing the confusion here, sent out a memo to capitol hill, a pretty brief one expressing what is included in here, what is not. it's not comprehensive, but i do want to read part of it, because there's a question about what exactly happens with benefits to americans, like snap, like student loans, all of these things that directly affect people on a daily basis. and it says that no program that provides direct benefits to americans is explicitly excluded from the pause and exempted from this review process. but they say in addition to social security and medicare, already explicitly excluded in this guidance, mandatory programs like medicaid and snap will continue without pause. now, that's something to follow up on, because we've seen some complaints about medicaid portals not working in the last two hours or so. that's something to follow up on. but this is a pledge from the white house in this memo to capitol hill saying that medicaid payments will not be paused as a result of this federal funding freeze. >> and, caitlin, i do want to mention ron wyden just tweeted that his staff has confirmed reports that medicaid portals are down in all 50 states following last night's federal funding freeze. at the very least here, there's so much confusion over this. what do you make of this? >> well, and that's why there are so many questions because saying, you know, that individuals who who get this, this money won't be affected. there's a lot of groups that get this money that then disperse it to individuals. and so that's been a big question here when it comes to these programs or things like homeless shelters, disaster response, veterans organizations as well, that money isn't given to an individual vet, for example, but it is given to an organization that helps these people. and so that's why there have been so many questions about this, as well as with the portals

white house is the white house reporter for the hill newspaper. let's start at the beginning or with the latest from president trump just posting on tooth social this morning the black hawk helicopter was flying too high by a lot, it was far above the 200 foot limit. it is not really too complicated to understand, is it? what do you make of the three question marks following the statement from the president? guest: we have been seeing the truth social posts that he has been bringing up questions or theories that he has about what happened in this crash. he was asked, why are you bringing up things before the investigation is over, and he pivoted away to say that the investigations are underweight but he has questions and has been focused on the helicopter in the flight patterns which all of us are focused on how this could have happened and how the helicopter was able to get that close to the plane. even yesterday when he was taking questions, he brought up the height of the helicopter, and should it have gone above or below or to the left or right of the plane and then posting again about it this morning was interesting and shows his commitment and pointing fingers at the helicopter pilots as those that were at fault here. whereas he also has brought up other areas he thinks are at fault, including diversity, inclusion and equity programs in the government and air traffic controllers but it is interesting this morning focused on the helicopter pilots. anything new from the federal agencies overlooking the response? guest: we know that they were able to get the black box out of the potomac river and it will tell us information about the final moments of the pilots on the american airlines j a what they were experiencing. otherwise, the secretary of defense pete hegseth usually the role will be the person to answer for how it went with the army helicopter getting that close to the plane and looking into if training should even operate that close to a national airport again. we will hear more from the military on that front. otherwise, it seems like the d.c. fire department, police, and ntsb are taking turns giving us more and more information as they receive it. we will have a white briefing later today that we might get some more information out of the white house. host: the briefing at 1:00 p.m. eastern time and we will have live coverage on c-span, c-span.org and the free video mobile app c-span now. the president also named a new interim faa administrator who is see and why was are not one in place when this collision occurred? guest: he said yesterday in his press conference, he was in the briefing room yesterday and said the deputy administrator at the faa will step in as an acting role. the reason there is not a current faa administrator in place is because mike whitaker, who was just confirmed in october 2023 by the senate for a five-year term at the head of the faa resigned on inauguration day. he announced that in december 2 his team that would -- that he would be leaving. and that left a hole. part of the reason when he decided to retire is he said comments about spacex, elon musk's company during testimony and elon musk then pushed for him to resigned
