according to him, harriet whitehead, one of the whitehead daughters survived the revolt because of his efforts. harriet was hidden between the mattress next to the spot where her own sister had been killed and the rebels never found her. once the rebels left the plantation, hubbard and some of the other slaves decided to secret harriet away from the house in case the rebels returned. as it turned out the decision was prudent. sometime after the rebels left the whitehead plantation they realized they had not killed everyone. they realized harriet was still alive. recognizing the oversight, they sent to unnamed men back to the whitehead plantation to kill harriet. while the assassins were walking back to the house, the slaves were trying to help harriet and placed her in a disguise and were carrying her away from the house. when they saw the rebels returning some of the whitehead , slaves went immediately to meet them and to convince them by some means to turn their course. the rebels assigned to kill the last whitehead were delayed and misdirected until the other to as could get harriet
