one of the white militias attract a lot of members, called the white league. in september the white league organizations a battle, pa assault, a coup attempt involving members, including my ancestor, that overthrows the white reconstruction government in the streets of new orleans. about 30 people die. half of them black, half of them white, and the success of the white league in toppling the reconstruction government for only a few days is so exhilarating to the white resistance that it becomes legend and lore in the city of new orleans and through the deep south, for generations. ultimately as the monument is built and the event, the battle is commemorated in annual ceremonies in new orleans for many decades. >> and in your personal family lore, according to your aunt maude, constant-- >> he's injured and head split open in this fight. and it's a turning point in reconstruction. it it's-- it causes the federal government in washington to lose its nerve and to lose its desire to continue the effort to integrate institutions of power and of ultimately within a

and you mentioned white supremacy. segregation was often justified by the state's rights ideology of southern political leaders. should bethe states able to manage their own political affairs without interference from the political guy from the federal government, which there had been under reconstruction. under reconstruction governments, there had been several civil rights laws passed. so you had the states rights defense ofhe main segregation. but underneath the state's rights ideology of segregation was a white supremacy, and this was preached at all levels of white southern society, from the pulpit, the press, certainly politicians, that african-americans were not citizens, they were not human, and that they were subjected to the systemic racism and violence of segregation. even thoughclear, the 15th amendment, which was passed in the aftermath of the civil war is one of the reconstruction amendments that explicitly forbade denying some of the right to vote based on race, southern states were able to do an end aro
