in the case of the 777 2,000, the whitney series, they're actually hollow. it's unique to this particular jet. you can see that brown casing around it, the kevlar casing. the engine designed, the sound is designed, to hold those fan blade in, in the event that one is -- to use the phrase -- there was a liberated. what we know about this engine the pratt whitney 4,000 on a united 777-200 back in 2018 is there have been inspection difficulties. the thermal inspections have not always been done correctly. as a result the faa has put out an instruction requiring these enjoins to be inspected more frequently even before this incident. john, what's happened here is clearly the faa, united, looked at this, saw a fan engine, fan blades, this is almost carbon copy of the incident and the same in the jowl plane in december. having learned the lessons of the 737 max. that's crucial, john, they have to learn the lessons of that, of not grounding the plane early, they've moved fast. >> one is inspection. they know there could be an issue. how do you catch this going forw

but the issue here is not boeing, the issue is this engine, which is manufactured by pratt & whitney. and as i understand it, there was some concern that this could happen. >> absolutely. you know, it's really tragic. in this case, there wasn't any loss of life, but many times we see in aviation incidents and accidents that there has been a pattern, that there has been a string of warnings or there were missed inspections. and here what we find is the federal aviation administration actually issued an air worthiness directive back in 2019 for these inspections. and of course, the ntsb just in 2020 issued ia report on a prio incident with united back in 2018. and the issue was the inspection of these fan blades with the procedure called thermal acoustic imaging. not unlike, shall we say, a microwave inspection or an ultrasound inspection. and what the ntsb and the faa admitted is that these inspections were not being done properly by pratt & whitney. and if done properly, they cost, according to this air worthiness directive, about $178 an inspection. but if you have to replace a blade
