let's bring in cnn's whitney wild. whitney, we now know the secret service turned over a single text message responding to that request by the inspector general for all the text messages related to the january 6th attack. so bring us up to speed here. what else are you learning? >> we're learning that the secret service has handed over more than 10,000 records after they issued a subpoena requesting volumes of documents. this comes after the inspector general basically complained to congressional overnigght committee saying he had tried to get relevant documents, including text messages that may have been sent on january 5th and january 6th of 2021 but he couldn't get them. he went to the department of homeland's secretary, alejandro mayorkas and then he went to the hill. that is where we are. this huge delivery of records includes a single text message but it also includes documents, and these were handed over to the inspector general as well, documents, policies, briefings, interviews, radio traffic and communication

cnn foreign correspondent whitney wild has the details. >> reporter: boris, sara, congressional oversight committees said the inspector general was aware of missing text messages as of september 2021 but sources tell cnn the secret service notified cuffari's office of the missing texts seven months earlier. the secret service explained the text messages were lost in a previously scheduled data migration of agents' cellphones. the committee and cuffari are very interested in these text messages because they could shed light on the secret service's response to january 6th and what they may have observed. they say that the problem is the agents didn't know the texts were completely gone and they tried to go back to the cellphone provider to retrieve the messages but they couldn't do it. in july of 2021, investigators with the inspector general's office told the department of homeland security they were no longer seeking these text messages. cuffari's office then appeared to restart that probe into the text messages in december of 2021. these new details show just how many people realized thi

whitney, what are you learning?et service received a notice wednesday telling the agency to stop investigating the matter because the inspector general's office feels that this could interfere with the inspector general's own investigation. the letter adds to this growing tension between the secret service and the inspector general over these potentially missing text messages, being sought as well by the house select committee as part of its investigation into former president donald trump's actions and movements on january 6th, 2021. here is a quote, to ensure the integrity of our investigation, the secret service must not engage in any further investigative activities regarding the collection of evidence referenced above. this is from dhs deputy inspector general. again, this coming wednesday. the secret service now unsure what to do, because there are other oversight bodies telling them to conduct this internal investigation. they already told the house select committee they were trying very hard to abide by the

whitney wild joins us live. how big of a deal is this investigation? it's criminal? >> reporter: this is a big deal. this is certainly complicating matters for the secret service in the short term. because as you know, they have this house select subpoena that directed them to conduct an internal investigation. the inspector general came back to them today to say, in effect, stop what you're doing. here is a quote from that letter, to ensure the integrity of our investigation, the secret service must not engage in any further investigative activities regarding the collection of the evidence that they are discussing earlier in this letter, including immediately refraining from interviewing potential witnesses, collecting devices or taking any other action that would interfere, jake, and this is crucial, with an ongoing criminal investigation. again, this letter adding to this growing tension between the secret service and the department of homeland security's infspector general over the missing text messages. those are being sought by other oversight committees. the n

whitney wild for us, thank you very much. let's go now to that fake elector investigation in georgia. 11 people who called themselves alternate electors for trump in 2020 have been sent a letter by the fulton county district attorney. cnn's sara murray is following this. what do you know? >> reporter: that's right, this is part of the criminal investigation into donald trump and his allies that's been going on in georgia, and what we're learning from a new court filing is that the district attorney there, fwillis sent a letter, informing that they are targets in their investigation. people who agreed to sign on as fake electors, even though joe biden had won the state. in the court filing, the attorneys for the fake electors say the grand jury subpoenas they received are unreasonable and oppressive. the district attorney apparently in her letters to them telling them they were targets said that her investigation has matured, new evidence has come to light, and that's why she believes that they are now targets in this investig

. >> okay, let's get the latest from cnn law enforcement correspondent whitney wilde and cnn's senior judiciary committee evan perez. tell us about the missing texts and where the inspector general in the homeland security department is also under fire. >> well, this has been really a pattern over the last few weeks that we've seen these key agencies unable to retrieve data from, albeit about a year and a half ago. we're learning, according to the "washington post," is there appears to be an inability for the inspector general to retrieve key information from, as you pointed out, ken cuccinelli and chad wolfe. the reason this is important is they thheld high profile agenci and also for what happened on january 6th. and, you know, honestly, in the days that followed as well. the issue here is different from what we've been reporting with the secret service. so the issue here -- again, this is according to the "washington post" and information that we've collected at cnn as well, is that these two men when they left their posts gave their cell phones back to the department of homeland s

let's get analysis from whitney wild, as well as legal analyst elliot williams, and nia malika henderson. i know you have new exclusive reporting on when the homeland security department's inspector general first learned of these missing secret service text messages. what can you share with us? >> what we are learning is that this inspector general's office knew many months. so what we learned of the inspector general's office was aware in december 2021. now sources are telling cnn that the dhs oig's office knew about that as early as may of 2021. and later on, two months later in july of 2021, wolf, our sources are telling us the inspector general's office told investigators with the department of homeland security they were no longer seeking those text messages. this timeline is extending here. further our sources tell us the secret service didn't realize until too late that the text messages were actually gone. at one point, to try to reconcile this, they tried to go back to the cell phone provide tore retrieve the text messages. they were unable to do so. that was happening in may, w

whitney, the secret service on the committee that they aren't currently aware of any text messages thatt. but how does that lineup with everything we house we have been learning? >> there are two competing narratives. don, the inspector general clearly thinks that the text message that he should have received through his investigation but did not. the secret service, however, has maintained, that they have been fully compliant. they've handed over everything that the various entities who of investigating them have asked for. however, they say they are continuing to conduct forensic examinations of cell phones to be absolutely sure that nothing gets deleted that shouldn't have been. so, there are still a lot about sending questions. but at this point, sources within the secret service that laying us that nothing was deleted that was supposed to be handed over to the ig. and it wasn't done maliciously. rather, anything that would have been deleted was just happenstance because of this ill timed email migration, don. >> okay. so, jason, i want to know what you think about this explanation,
