but he was never too busy for wichita. he headed up campaigns to stop bond issues for public projects such as the new jail, and he fought any and all the taxes. most news stories about his efforts began with the words billionaire willard derby is opposing or proposing. but to others he epitomized the spirit of kansas. he was a true entrepreneur who can spit out ideas rapid-fire. but a fish farm that the grain elevators. even the catcher. the executives said to me, will it has 10,000 more ideas in the time he had to put them into action. there was another story that bob page told me. agassi had to introduce himself to a group of people once and he said my job each month is to prepare your 31 ideas that will occur be his turn out and carry the 29 of them. that. [laughter] this guy was like -- but he wanted his best ideas to come back to wichita. he wanted to make a model city to be admired and imitated by communities elsewhere as the best place to work, raise a family, and enjoy life. so whether he'd love to read, there was

he loved wichita because it was the furthest to get from both coasts. but it was his love for this community and the impact he had here and elsewhere that went well beyond that. he wore many hints. but he called himself a builder. if you look around town you can see that he did just that. he began with building the small brick homes that uc, returning veterans. he went on to bigger developments like commercial properties, one of the first shopping plazas and was a tall. it in the late 1980's he had a vision or maybe was crazy and was the only one crazy enough to build the epicenter, done tells tallest building with the hope that it will become a beacon for downtown revitalization. he lost the building and something like $5 million in the process, but he never regretted building more projects. in northern nevada where i first ran across and working in my first newspaper job are the college, that is another story, but he was a rancher who spoke of against the bureau of land management and build the state's largest private dam and reservoir pretty a valuab

a massive cargo plane stranded at a wichita airport after landing there by mistake. the faa says the boeing 747 was supposed to land at mcconnell air force base but ended up at this smaller airport many miles away. they say the runway, too short for the big plane to take off. cnn's aviation correspondent rene marsh is live in washington. rene, what to do, what to do? >> reporter: that is the question, what to do, what to do. we're talking about a massive cargo plane. you can see a photo of what we're talking about there, video of this dreamlifter, the 747. it is used to ship cargo. just to give you an idea as to how huge this thing is, it is capable of hold something 19 million golf balls, the wings itself on this plane, it would essentially cover the total floor space of four three-bedroom homes with two bathrooms. that's how big this thing is here. the problem is this morning, it landed at the wrong airport, about ten miles away from where it was supposed to be. it was supposed to land at another airport, we are told it was the mcconnell air force base, happening l

you're looking at a live shot of the airport in wichita, kansas. that is where a boeing dreamlifter cargo jet landed late yesterday. the only problem, it was supposed to land at mcconnell air force base some 12 miles away. we expect it to take off any time now. phil lebeau has been following the story, and he joins us live from chicago. phil, first of all, how did this happen? and second of all, this is a much shorter strip than mcconnell has. how's this going to work? >> reporter: let's start first with taking off and the shorter runway. the runway at jabara airport is about 6,100 feet long. typically a 747 modified like this would have a ruppway of at least 9,100 feet, a 3,000-foot difference. they're not going to take off until all parties sign off. authorities say yes, we believe we have enough room for taking off. that's the takeoff we may see relatively soon. as for how it got here, the dreamlifter was carrying 787 dreamliner parts from italy, stopped in new york and was on its way to the facility in wichita, spirit air systems where it was g

new trail -- the new trail gains its name from a mixed blood stock cherokee trader from present-day wichita kansas named jesse chisolm who freighted goods to indian villages more than 200 miles to the south. the name "chisolm trail" was originally applied only to the trail north of the red river. the entire trail was early called the kansas trail, the abilene trail or the mccoy trail. about 1870, newspapers in texas began referring to the whole route as the chisolm trail. and that name stuck. the herds followed the shawnee route as far as waco before splitting and continuing on to ft. worth and then crossing the red river at red river station. the main route from san antonio across indian territory was joined by many feeder trails. only two are shown in this map, but there were many others further down, as far as the rio grande. except at river crossings, cattle followed the route in a general northerly direction, but with so many herds moving north, the trail was often broadened just to find enough grass for grazing. on entering kansas, branches of the trail eventually reached various rail

this is a very small airport outside of wichita. this plane normally fields about 9,000 feet to take off safely. they have about 6,100 feet here. so they have taken some fuel off of this plane. they have brought in a new crew. they have done everything they can to essentially maximize the performance of this aircraft on a takeoff and they're going to put the pedal to the metal in a few minutes and go as fast and as steep as they can to get this plane off the ground. they have shut down some roads, including the kansas highway, just in case this plane is low on the takeoff. they don't want to come too low and take off the top of somebody's car that might be passing by on one of the nearby kansas highways. but this has been an on going drama for the better part of 15 hours or so right now. and we're waiting for the final moments when they're about to -- to see if this take off at a good speed. >> they were supposed to take off at 2:00 eastern time and they're 11 minutes behind schedule here. they normally would need a runway of 9,199
