what do we expect to be in these anticipated new leaks by wikileaks? >> we don't know exactly, but the defense department official told me today the iraq war database, which could be in this new release includes reports on a significant acts on the ground, unit level counties and tactical reports from the field in iraq. the pentagon does not know as well exactly what wikileaks has right now, but it is bracing for another massive leak in the next few days. with the pentagon task force of about 100 people or so, ready to review the leaked documents. that team was set up after the july leak by wikileaks founder of the afghan war logs. the task force looking for names or sensitive information that could compromise or harm people who work with the u.s. or put u.s. soldiers in danger. the new release is reported to include nearly 400,000 pages of classified u.s. army documents on the war in iraq which would make this the single largest military leak in u.s. history. >> 400,000 pages. we also heard from another whistle blower today, a former f.b.i. special ag

documents released about the war in iraq released by wikileaks. the pentagon says the classified information could put the lives of u.s. soldiers at risk. >> reporter: it's the biggest leak of secret military information in u.s. history. war files released by wikileaks detail years of civilian bloodshed and detainee abuse in iraq often by iraqi forces while the u.s. is accused of turning the other way. >> we hope to correct some of that attack on the troops that occurred before the war, during the war and which has continued on. >> reporter: the nearly 400,000 leaked documents are field reports from u.s. military and intelligence agents gathered between 2004 and 2009. they indicate u.s. forces often failed to investigate hundreds of cases of reported abuse, torture and murders by iraqi security. they also show as many as 15,000 more civilians died than what was publicly reported. cbs news pentagon correspondent david martin notes the leak doesn't offer much new information on the war but says it could be learn more about how the military operates.

almost 400,000 secret military documents have been released by wikileak. the files document terrible abuses by iraqi forces. >> reporter: late this afternoon, news organizations began posting documents from the iraq war given to them by julian asange an his wikileak website. it first appeared in al- jazeera. >> the prison torture cover up, the extent of deadly check point encounters. >> reporter: wikileak is believed to have 700,000 documents. the big concern is that the documents contain the names of iraqis who now might be subject to reprisal. >> there are iraqi names that bethink were exposed here because they were the ones that were cooperating with us. >> reporter: the documents are reports sent in by american units on the field from 2004 through 2009. civilian casualty, 100,000 according to one tablelation, later the numbers previously made public. many killed by american troops but most of them by other iraqis. secret prison, iraqis abused by other iraqis. >> you can see by the iraqi military and security services the torturing of over 1,000 people

they were named in a massive batch of military documents released by wikileaks. that's not all the documents reveal. so for the latest on what's in them, the damage they could potentially do and how the administration is handling this, we're turning to our pentagon correspondent chris lawrence. chris, there's a lot of documents, close to 400,000, i read. i know you're starting to read them. has anything sort of struck you the most as you pore through them? >> reporter: starting to read is the key phrase, there, sanjay. one thing that jumps out is wikileaks claims that well over 100,000 iraqis were killed in the war, that's tens of thousands more than what the u.s. military is estimating. it also goes into great detail, some very interesting facts about how some of those deaths occurred, including the fact that the military consulted lawyers in certain instances. take a look at this. back in 2007 an apache helicopter targeted two iraqi men which it thought may have been firing mortars. the men made surrendering motions but take a look at what the report says. craz
