you have to remember when you go hiking in the wilderness, you are in the wilderness.ry. and that's why people are having more encounters with bears. it's not that bears are getting more aggressive, it's there's more people taking hikes out in the wilderness, apparently they didn't know the pear was inhe area -- the bear was in the area, didn't know the cubs were in the area. you want to make a lot of noise to make sure the bear hears you, right? they don't have real good eyesight. >> no. in general humans generally don't have a lot of conflict with bears when the bears does not have cubs around. but when it has cubs, there's not much you can do, and it's just the chance you've got to take when you take a hike. jon: considering what happened here, it's amazing that more kid weren't hurt. i mean, for instance, the two that apparently were kicking it, two of them are in pretty serious condition, we are led to believe, and two more maybe were bitten, but considering, you know, how far they were from help, this turned out about as well as you might expect. >> well, look, i

to truly appreciate why wild animals belong in the wilderness, you have to go there. so we went to one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world -- the costa rican rain forest. we're in this remote area known as the peninsula. we left the big city heading for the crown jewel of costa rica. we're here in the center of a small little gold mining town. it is also the gateway into a national park. in order to get in there you've got to hike for a couple days or you can do what we're doing and we're taking the arrow taxi. this serves all of costa rica. they clear-cut the rain forest. we packed up all of our gear and our guide into a tiny single engine plane and held on tight. this is one of the most biologically intense places on earth. that had to be the coolest landing. home to the largest and only primary low-land rain forest in the world, 140 different animal species, many endangered. this professor from the national university of costa rica is one hell of a guide. in just 24 hours, we saw more than most park visitors see in a week. rugged, remote, stunningly beautif
