more than 50 wildfires are raging in the western united states bringing the grand total of wildfiresyear to 33,000. at a cost of over $1 billion. yosemite is not the only national park under threat. mother jones reports that seven other national parks could feel the heat. the culprit behind the increase in forest fires is a familiar one, climate change. increasingly dry conditions in the western portion of the country literally added pul to the fire. in the past ten years, at least ten states have been hit by the largest or most destructive wildfires in respective histories. the average wildfire burns twice as many acres as it did 40 years ago. as the fires roar, the resources have been drying up. the sequester cut $28 million from the forest service this year, even though blazes stretched an already tight 2012 budget. perhaps that's why the state of california is continuing to take convicts out of cells and put them on the frontlines of wildfires where they work in 24-hour shifts for $1 an hour. the state estimates it saves taxpayers more than $80 million a year with the cheap labor

we have 14 large wildfires occurring. this does not count new lightning strikes that may have occurred tonight. northwest, eastern idaho, stretching southeast into montana. we've had such dry conditions that the swath of lightning storms bringing hundreds of strikes, is tracking out, our red flag warning indicating the favor lightning started fires, is favored for idaho as well. in addition to all these warnings stretched out across the northwest we've got dense smoke. big concerns as the overnight hours temperatures cool, the air gets a little heavier and sinks and smoke gets very thick, settles in the valleys and makes it difficult to breathe. those of you who have problems already with asthma and such are going to have more problems with early morning hours and we'll get a little mixing in the air and we'll see things improve somewhat in the afternoon but not close to the fires in central idaho. so we're going obe watching this closely. we do have a little lightning in the cascades but as you move further over into the

. >> cal fire is preparing for wildfires sparked by dry lightning. there is a fire on bethel island where a fire was reported last night. >> reporter: good morning, fire burned through this five acres of dry brush. you can see the damage that was done here. a few buildings were threatened for a short time. in the end no damage was done to them. while the cause of this particular fire is unclear, dry lightning will be a big concern for firefighters across the bay area as we move throughout the day. a red flag warning went through midnight. the forecast calls for thunderstorms bringing gusty conditions, winds more than 25 miles per hour and the possibility of dry lightning. the lightning is a major concern for fire crews because the brush is so dry right, now, in most areas. we stopped by a cal fire station in the south bay where extra firefighters and additional engines are on stand by because of these conditions. cal fire is modifying how it responds to calls to keep crews free in case lightning does spark a fire. with a number of large wildfires bur

let's get right to the wildfire. rim fire in yosemite grew to 200 square miles bigger than the city of san jose. flames threaten buildings including homes already being destroyed. crews are making little progress with containment now at just 7%. this is now the 15th largest wildfire in california's history. winds are a big problem today for crews fighting the rim fire. abc 7 news meteorologist leigh leigh glaser has more. >> you can get a sense, you see that fuzzy area. that's where the smoke plume is. very large. affecting even south lake tahoe, but you can see some of the convection right there. that is because of the heat of that fire. it just makes its own weather system. i do want you take you out to show you current readings. temperature right now, 88 degrees, relative humidity very low at 17%. tomorrow highs near 90, gusts to 35 miles per hour. there is a chance of dry lightning tuesday and wednesday. here is another look at this. you can see the smoke plume. let me take you in a little bit closer, and you can

wildfires burning. how do you go about even fighting it? >> reporter: well, that's why they have crews out ahead of this fire where they can. digging out containment lines. cutting down trees. dragging out the dried out brush that is there fueling this fire. trying to draw a line literally in the forest, if they can. the problem is the winds, chris, keep kicking up. sometimes gusting over 40 miles an hour. shifting the flames. so it's running in every direction. and pulling these embers out of the fires, throwing them sometimes a mile away, starting a spot blaze that can really extend the fire and that's been a major issue. >> you've been covering wildfires across the country this summer. at one point, there were 50 wildfires burning at the same time in 11 different states. how bad has this season been, and why is it so bad? >> reporter: you know what's amazing, chris, is right now the acreage burned is not nearly as bad as it has been in other seasons. the problem is these are explosive fires, again, driven by these winds that that jump ar
