take the extreme heat that caused wildfires in 2013. was it climate change? according to research published in the bulletin of the meteorological society, probably yes. and what about the winter of 2014, climate change or just wild weather? a study out of oxford university said that that event was probably climate change. california suffered through three years of debilitateing drought. was climate change to blame? probably not. california's drought, while extreme, is not an uncommon occurrence for the state. natural weather trends are the primary factors. still, extremes are becoming the norm. 2014 will go down as the warmest year ever recorded worldwide. for climate scientists understanding why is evolving with every event. california's storm of the decade may, in fact, be tied to a recently observed phenomenon known as atmospheric rivers. >> atmospheric rivers are here to stay. it's chalk full of water vapors, strong winds, and is carrying ten times the water. >> it seems to be very severe weather phenomenon. >> well, there is a lot to learn in terms of at

i took it photo of a wildfire on tuesday, it makingened about 50 acres. p so todayso today the risk again of wildfires. we have winds gusting to around 25 miles per hour. they're generally calm now and temperatures are generally above freezing. near 40 nearby suburbs. a few spots have dipped near freezing including frederick and manassas and warrenton. also martinsburg. and we'll have lots of sunshine today. temperature temperatures will be hovering near 40 through 8:00 a.m.. by noon should be hitting the low 60s. so a dramatic warming. and then peaking near 70 by late afternoon with that blustery wind moving on through and increasing clouds. those clouds will be ahead of a cool front that will be coming through this time tomorrow morning. we'll have showers away all this area in green between 6:00 to 7:00 a.m.. so some of the roads will be wet for the morning commute. may settle down a bit midday. but then thundershowers rolling through these areas in yellow and orange away the pennsylvania border by 3:00 p.m.. then they get closer to the metro area by 5

what that means conditions are ripe for wildfires.ef meteorologist scott williams is here to break down what's going on. scott? >> lucy, hard to believe that we had that red flag warning in effect considering yesterday we dealt with the clouds, the damp and dreary conditions. we have temperatures right now in the upper 60s 70 degrees currently in philadelphia. but look at the humidity. it is dry only at 16%. winds out of the northwest at 10 miles per hour with a few higher gusts. but stepping outdoors it has been a comfortable day temperatures 69 degrees in wilmington. upper 60s in wrightstown. 68 right now in allentown. but you can see the areas highlighted in red that includes trenton, philadelphia, areas north and west gusty winds low humidity that red flag warning is in effect until 7:00 o'clock tonight. so we have those winds right now anywhere tone 15 gusts to 20. high pressure is off to the north. so we have winds out of the north and that continues to dry our air mass out as well but look to the south. clouds even some showers
