alicia: some sad news about a morning tv icon, willard scott, sometimes whacky weatherman from the todaylive in our new york city newsroom with more. hi, alex. >> reporter: hi, alicia. his wife sharing this sad news, not specifying the exact cause of death. the famous meteorologist known for his big personality and kind spirit died sounded by family. he brought more light and lightness to the role giving birthday shoutouts, blasting their photos to millions of people around the country. he would sometimes dress up in wild costumes, deliver the forecast at fairs, make appearances on late night tv shows and take on a role as spokesperson for various charities and other organizations. scoot gained notoriety for his role as bozo the clown and original ronald mcdonald. he wrote a couple books during his lifetime. scott spent 65 years at nbc, joining the network in 1980. but liss career started at wrc tv the nbc affiliate in washington, d.c. where other notable reporters and anchors made stops as well. like katie couric who reacted to his passing, writing in part, he played such an out-size ro
