illinois had two important senators who were part of this mix, paul douglas, people like george mcgovern who was a congressman and william fulbright. and amazing cast of characters. as i was reading one account, a vivid account of washington on the eve of the inaugural about the trains pulling into town written by a fairly junior reporter, david alverson who has 6 or 7 major books out there. the washington post had a young beat reporter outside kennedy's house in georgetown, and his name was tom wolfe and he has 6 or 7 major books out there. these, the cast of characters is quite remarkable. kennedy and eisenhower are interesting in their own right but particularly interesting as opposites of each other. they are wildly different personalities. eisenhower, i will say was the one character who surprised me. he was a much more interesting and complex person than our clichÉ notion holds. eisenhower grew up in abilene, kansas, went to west point come military superstar, 5-star general. the man who defeated hitler, organized d day. his public demeanor was a placid, amiable guy who liked to golf and cook steak and play bridge.
