♪ susan: william doyle, newsweek published an excerpt from your biography of the late senator orrin hatchhat wings him to vladimir putin's war on ukraine. where is the intersection in these stories? william: there are several, the first is orrin hatch, in the obama-trump inaugural, orrin hatch basically vanished from washington, d.c. unknown to almost everybody, he was whisked away to a secret location and appointed by the incoming trump administration as the nuclear designated survivor. my book actually explores that day in great detail and there are major surprises that happened inside the details of that day. what that illustrates is the terrible burden of having a nuclear football several yards away from you, and orrin hatch had a military officer with a nuclear football ready to follow his orders in case something terrible happened at the inauguration. the irony is orrin hatch was probably the best equipped federal official to do that -- that is a tradition that goes back basically to the carter-reagan transition. orrin hatch had served as the chairman of three major congressional co

william doyle, obviously the senate went on to confirm clarence thomas 52-48. u had a chance to interview him for this book. what were his reflections on the clarence thomas nomination many years later? mr. doyle: in that clip, he accused professor hill of concocting her story. no matter how you look at it, that is a statement that you cannot really justify. because none of us were in the room with clarence and anita hill. they are the only people who know what happened. and to this day, people believe thomas or hill. and it is very hard to change anybody's mind on that. but that was a disaster of a spectacle. largely elderly white men asking these intensely personal questions of an african-american professor. clarence thomas considered it to be a vicious attack against him. the whole episode, which was presided over by joe biden of course, who cut the proceedings short as witnesses -- at least one witness seemed to be on the verge of coming forward to collaborate anita hill's side of things. and as i understand it, joe biden never apologized to anita hill, and
