william howe was put in charge of the army and commanded at the battle of bunker hill, he would remain in command until the middle of the war in 1778. sounds like a good old boy arrangement. two brothers how one head of the army and one head of the navy. sir william howell insisted his brother command the navy if he was to assume command. he promised his constituents he would never serve in america. he had spoken out against the american war. he imposed conditions if he did so, but one of the most important conditions which was very sensible because there was no such thing as a joint chief of staff. it's a problem in any war for the various service -- by having to coordinate and by having his brother command the navy, it led to a wonderful relationship between the two services and most importantly to excellent coordination. between them, they were able to land troops anywhere along the coast of america. so far from being a mediocre commander had chosen over 110 more senior generals. there are only about 118 people with general commands going from major general up to full general. so he
