there are others who win the war broke out were quite true to their principles like william jennings bryan. when he saw the writing on the wall he left the wilson administration knowing he could not support an administration that went to war. and so i think when it comes back to darrow what we can say is he was not a systematic thinker and that he was always willing to give up a little bit to get a larger goal. >> the bribery cases -- this is one of the spots on darrow's career. it is actually ambiguous still in a historical sense but he defended to people who had almond the "l.a. times" printing plant and killed several people in the process. and, during the course of that, people on his legal team were charged and then he was charged with trying to bribe jurors. he was never convicted of that, but it is an open question. there are historians that argue that he did it and there are other historians who point to those historians in say so-and-so says he did it. what is your view on this and what does it say about what type of lawyer he was? >> let's start with that. even when he was in ohi

[laughter] he was very progressive on a lot of things and pretty retro on a bunch of other things. he, unfortunately, came to the anti-imperialist thing fairly late, and his reasons for being anti-imperialist kind of got drowned out in the din of war. one thing about the spanish-american war that's unusual is it was a war that was more popular with young people than old people. the young men were just itching to be, to prove themselves in battle. that was, you know, something thai been hear -- they've been hearing, gramps, and if their fathers were older, talk about the glorious days of the civil war, and they wanted to be part of it. an important thing about this war was for white people anyway in this country was that for a young southern man

roosevelt -- wilson's secretary of state, william jennings bryan, was a pacifist who really was a pose today the exercise of american power, resigned because he thought the wilson administration was getting too belligerent by 1915. fdr's immediate boss was a will sewn yang and a disciple of bryan's who looked upon the uniform navy with kind of bemused suspicion. he was always reluctant to use the navy in any way. and, of course; this was all anathema to franklin roosevelt who spent his entire eight years as assistant secretary very, in that wonderful way of his, very charmingly but effectively undermining his boss on a day-to-day basis. the extent to which franklin roosevelt was insubordinate in the wilson navy department toward his boss, i mean, when daniels would leave town, franklin would have fun and do all sorts of things which daniels would have to undo when he returned. and yet the amazing thing is that daniels retained his affection for fdr. he loved franklin roosevelt. he actually survived franklin roosevelt. i think he, i think he thought of franklin roosevelt as his kind of
