ranch managers still live on homes in the property designed by william randolph hurst's original architect of the exotic animals hurst once kept here. >> back in the '30s and '40s, he had the largest private zoo in the world. >> reporter: the ranch supported a small town where the family's including the first school house built for the children of ranch hands. sebastian's general store is now a tasting room with wines bottled under the hurst ranch label. >> what a view here. >> it's hard to beat. >> reporter: hurst's land stretched from the hills all the way to the ocean. so a long stretch of the coastline belonged to the ranch as well. >> 18 miles. it was the full length of the ranch. >> reporter: in the conservation deal, that coastline has been preserved for public access. this california landscape will remain forever as it looked when william randolph hurst in failing health was forced to leave. >> it was in 1948 that he left the ranch for the last time. it was said he had a tear coming down his face when he came down the hill. >> he wrote to his mother, he said, i love this ranch. it
