>> 1784, i think it was, if i remember correctly, william thompson's a tavern keeper in charleston, south carolina. and john rutledge, as perhaps you all know, was about as high in the south carolinian aristocracy as you could. >> and there was nothing higher than that. >> nothing higher than john rutledge. and he sends his slave -- i think it was the fourth of july to see the fireworks, to go to thompson's tavern and go up on the roof of thompson's tavern to see the fireworks. well, thompson turns the slave away. a female slave. he says no, you can't go up there. well, rutledge is outraged. and he goes then -- he's a major figure of course in the state legislature. he goes to the state legislature. and he urges a bill to banish thompson from the state for this insult. well, thompson takes to the press. and he writes, what can only be a typical american claim of equality against this kind of arrogance. i think it expressed a kind of middling resentment that this coming-out -- and for all places to take place in charleston shows that even there where the structure of the society was much m

one of the last witnesses, william mikey thompson, said he saw huguely briefly around midnight when huguely stuck his head into his room, saw that he was in bed and went to use the bathroom. thompson told the court he thought huguely was in there at least 10 seconds. the prosecution believes huguely was cleaning himself off after leaving love's apartment in the early morning hours of may 3rd, 2010. the jury also heard from three women who say they were contacted by george huguely the night love was killed. the women all testified about either talking to or receiving text messages in the hours before and around the time of love's death. the text messages were not read aloud in court, but on cross- examination the defense attorney asked caitlin taylor if she knew george had a crush on her. two other women testified about hearing from huguely around 11:30 and midnight the night of the murder. as the defense case got underway, a neuropathologist from chicago was called to the stand and asked his opinion on how yeardley love died and it's quite different from what the medical examiner believes.

so with us, our chief foreign affairs correspondent anne thompson and ian williams who's been based on the pacific rim and who, by the way, spent over a month reporting in and around fukushima, both with us here in new york tonight. anne, first environmentally, we've been talking about the mass and its traveling speed. could this be that? >> well, it's possible, but highly unlikely. at least that's noaa says. there's a scientist in seattle, or washington state who believes this is debris in the tsunami, in large part there was a buoy that was made in japan. but noaa says these bouys have washed up on the coast for many, many years and it would have had to travel at n almost a direct line for 23 miles a day to hit the west coast. the degree brobris is coming bu not supposed to reach our shores until early next year. >> if this is not it, it will get here at some point. is there some way it could happen, given the volume of what you saw roll into the sea? >> the statistics are staggering. by some estimates 500,000 buildings were either destroyed or damaged by the tsunami. just to give yo
