the one politician who addressed the crowd then san francisco assemblyman willie brown told the crowdul. then asked for silence. >> one moment of silence for the young man who died. >> reporter: did the death of robert hillsboro bring people out of the closet and into the streets? a local political lobbyists said that the sheer number of people who came out of the parade gave them political clout. people who were afraid to come out were now asking, are you with us? a large public funeral was held the day after the parade. he was a man who was described as working for the works department and who had no interest in politics. >>> the man who stabbed robert hillsboro was convicted of second degree murder the next year. cordova served five years in prison. cordova has served time since then on two other convictions. and most recently was booked under his new name, trudy cardova. his parol officers say cardova was living as a woman when he was discharged from parol four years ago. >>> when we come back on a second look, why is bob mackenzie dressed up as a woman? it all has to do with a sa

then when tom ammiano ran against willie brown, i got inspired. i thought, someone with integrity and honesty, if they can run for mayor, maybe i can be somebody who represents what is true about our people. that is what inspired me to run and be a candidate. one thing this year that i really tackling, and i expect to for a long time, looking at me and how it operates in my district. san francisco, we talk about it being a transit first city, but it does not mean a lot if transit is not very well thought out in places away from downtown. my district is where we need to create better options. all the way down to randall street, there is no accessible boarding areas for the church. there is a woman that lives in a wheelchair on santa rosa. she has to go across to glen park to get out transit. >> those new stations, those are the ones that we are going to have to depend on. >> along balboa park station, near geneva, i have been pushing hard to get ramps for pedestrians. right now, it is dangerous to cross the street. i want to insure the department o

brown earlier. how often have you talked to them. >> i know them vaguely. willie and rows of the wonderful friends for so many years. they give me great advice. i asked them a lot for the vice, especially when we have such a very serious fight with jerry brown over redevelopment. i have never intended for them at all to be a negative, because he is doing what he needs to do. >> eliminated from the state budget? >> it also hurts us in long term ways. we have used redevelopment of the correct way. the governor knows that. he knows there are other things to gain by this elimination. in that dialogue and, i have asked for a lot of device. with all of the changing term limits, and who do we talk with? he says to be bold, talk to people you ordinarily won't talk to. and to build allegiances as mayor. for this great city, i can pick up the phone and call people and loss angeles, all of the mayor's. that was his first device. yet the 10 biggest mares together and start forming allegiance. when you put that together, you have a powerful voice of there. they listened across

willie brown actually made his name by going and trying to see one of the homes. it was a very political thing. he would walk up with a whole bunch of people in the person showing the home would sneak away. >> even in the teens, there were a lot of neighborhoods that had restrictions against certain groups of people. >> this was in the 1950's. willie mays had trouble buying a house in san francisco. a couple of people would not show him a house. they had to enlist the mayor and a bunch of people. this is their reservoir. companies would take a block and there would start wrecking houses. there were building two a day -- they were building two with a. the 1930's were the big boom times for the sunset. >> this is a recession. >> these are the homes in west would park. -- in westwood park. >> how did this perform? the composite the assembly -- come's assembly -- composite assembly. >> they would stucco it. they would put chicken wire on it. >> when i inspect buildings that are being remodeled, i see that the chicken wire mesh is completely gone. >> it is galvanized.

. >> how does it compare with the others we checked with former san francisco mayor, willie brown and who has been looking into this whole issue what does it mean for lawmakers as mayor brown says, he has weathered a few storms himself but none like this. this scandal pails compared to others. here is mayor brown. >> you got to understand, that his problem is unlike that which ringo had or max seen waters or some other democrats, in that he is a total and complete embarrassment to everybody, wrangle was not if he isly an embarrassment to anybody. >> you can understand too. >> you did an article on this this week about the entire texting phenomenon. let's talk about the effect of the story. >>> well, weiner, if anything is a pioneer of sorts [ laughter ] >> he is a pioneer in this way. we are going to see -- 6% of americans right now have sent a nude or semi nude picture of themselves to someone else 17% received it. so he is on the vanguard of people who are going to see more and more politicians as the younger generation comes into political power with a weiner incident in their past

there were domestic partners under willie brown, early domestic partners, the registry.y were married on august 23, 2008, when it was still legal for same-sex couples to marry in california. carroll is an attorney specializing in family law, specifically lgbt family law, and she leads a referral panel and helps with lesbian rights. she was a group president back in the day, and she also was president of the lgbt democratic club, and that is so i first got to know carol as a very young gay man, new to san francisco and getting involved in the community, and she was one of the real leaders of the organization. over the last 15 years, i have learned an enormous amount from her, not just in politics but what it means to be a dignified leader in the community and really gain people's respect as a leader. carroll has also been very active with the women's building, including efforts to keep a safe space for women, which was a problem awhile back. kathy was a social worker working with disabled adults, and then working with another program. kathy and carol have also worked toge

mayor willie brown said that it was important invest in centralization. this is a conclusion we have come to over the past 10 years. unfortunately, in san francisco, unlike other organizations comparable to the city and county of san francisco or you have the two-thirds of your resources in i.t. -- where you have two-thirds of your resources in i.t., and the rest of your resources disperse in specialized departments, we've done exactly the opposite in san francisco. the vast majority of our resources are decentralized among different departments, and that has led to, i think, the frustrating situations with i.t. in san francisco, as well as the frustrations many of us have had with the department of technology. i do think that continuing to start i.t. in the way -- continuing to starve i.t. any way that we have been doing is not the way to proceed. i would suggest we not move forward with the final amounts. i think if we want the department to finish the e-mail consolidation project, the server consolidation project, bringing the enterprise contracts toge

candidate would be someone that i would support, but when tom and ammiano ran for mayor against willie brown, somehow, i got inspired. i thought, it someone that has integrity and honesty, that comes from the community, could run for mayor, maybe it is we something that can represent the community. i wanted to look at it from a candid perspective. >> when you did run for the border supervisors, what did you learn from that experience, from the campaign? >> from the campaign? so much. you knock on a lot of doors, talk to a lot of people. some of the things were interesting, how connected a lot of people were to their schools, communities. people were involved in their communities in some many ways. we have neighborhood organizations. there are so many people actively involved in the communities, neighborhoods, our organizations, child care facilities, relationships with seniors, at the park. that was something exciting to see. there were multiple ways for people to be involved as residents and members of the city. i was stunned by just how many artists were in district 11. there are so many a
