sarah westwood with the washington examiner and mike willis, senior reporter at the hill. good to see you both. >>> happening now. more details about the missile test by north korea. we first got word of that test yesterday evening. launched from a site north of the capital city of pyongyang. this after north korea released a propaganda video showing the u.s. military and washington landmarks in the croshairs. nbc's kelly cobiell is in seoul, south korea with more on this story. kelly, what do we know about the tests and reaction in the region? >> reporter: sure, thomas. u.s. specific command tells us they detected the launch at 5:33 a.m. local time this morning at this launch site north of pyongyang, the capital as you mentioned. two u.s. military officials tell nbc thnews this is a medium ran ballistic missile. the kind of missile they suspect has be has been tested twice before. two apparent failures. this time around, the missile was launched and airborne for a couple of minutes and military officials tell nbc news it exploded in mid air 20 miles from the launch site.

joining me from "the new york times," mike willis from the hill. the president did not mention syria directly in his weekly address that was released earlier today. he has not also talked about the fact that russia is a supporter of assad and his regime in syria. what do you think the motivations are there to not mention those important things? >> it's tough to say. i think he's mainly reacting to the idea that there's such still operation on some sides of the aisle, you think about republicans like ann coulter coming out saying this is exactly what you said you were not going do do, you were not going do get involved in the middle east. there's reports obviously that donald trump, president trump is seen as someone who did this because of an emotional reason, he was instinctively acting in syria because of that, that these images of people being hurt really moved him. while that many some ways can be interesting to people, as a president you want to be seen as someone who is taking strategic action and not someone reacting to one single thing. >>

the nasdaq hill all-time highs with soaring tech stocks like amazon and alphabet. the dow down about 52 points right now. and gerri willis we saw the dow and the nasdaq down today. how come? >> it started out so great. we thought we would have a big day. but what happened, investors got a look at trump's tax plan. there's some disappointment that there aren't more specifics. they're not mad about the levels or some of the things they heard. they're wondering when we get more specifics. can the deal pass. big questions. a lot of people looking at the detai detail. in the gdp report, 0.7%. that's punk for the first quarter. first quarters don't usually do that well. it's when we get a negative. people looked at that and particularly consumer spending and said it's painful. we're having a bit of a sell off. nasdaq had been pointed to set a high. it's doing very well. amazon, one of the stocks doing super well at an all-time high of 950. now a little below that. all of those being tech companies, google, microsoft, amazon, doing super well. had reports of earnings this week. all pretty good. >> the president's tax reform pla
