this morning, san francisco baseball fans are remembering willie mccovey. the hall of fame first baseman died yesterday at stanford hospital after a battle against a series of health issues. mccovey hit 521 home runs in his major league playing career which spanned 4 decades. and his personality made him an even bigger hit with fans. mccovey was national league rookie of the year in 1959. the giants' second season in california. and he was the league's most valuable player in 1969. after retiring as a player, he served as an ambassador for the team. >> fans have been paying tribute at a statue of mccovey which stands prominently at at&t park. his career ended in 1980 long before that stadium was built but he attended many games there in his later years. >> i used to see games at candlestick back in the 1970s. and what i remember about stretch mccovey was that he was so strong and confident but at the same time so calm and in no way arrogant. >> willie mccovey was 80 years old. we have more on his life and career that can be found online at kpix.com. you act
