[applause] >> a couple people i would like to thank. one of our main partners, recology, who is here. there will be picking up garbage on time in making sure that the area is restored back to normal everyday. the pilot itself runs from 9:00 in the morning to 7:00 in the evening. and so, during that time -- >> no. >> ok, at 10:00 until 6:00 this and the merchants will be out there. between 9:00 and 10:00 is the preparation time. and between 6:00 and 7:00 this the cleanup time. we will be putting out some barricades along the parking strips. so those will all be within the sidewalk. nobody will be allowed on the street unless you are crossing the street at an intersection. ok, and the police have that information, and the sfmta also have that information because we have promised to allow the bu

of course, the mayor then was willie brown, and he said, what are you going to do with this? and of course the first thing you do if you read it, and you read it with the understanding that there is probably a lot of information there that will be very hard and goals and programs that will be very hard to implement at the department of public works, which had historically been a very male- dominated agency. but we made a commitment to the mayor, we made a commitment to the commission that we would study that report and to implement every single one of those as that applied at every level of the department. i was willing to do that because around in may were a lot of other powerful women, who said it would not be that hard. all you had to do is pay attention to it, and all you had to do was not take no for an answer and all you had to do was look forward, not backward. and with those varied little pieces of advice, which took on that task and we found at the local managers. we found that many women who were trying to even get to the blue-collar work, the work on the streets, h

that may have been better introducing willie brown saying that than dianne feinstein. i digress. s just reminded of that quote. willie, don't take offense and please don't write about that on sunday. [laughter] >> i'm just, as diane knows, i'm a big fan that goes back to my high school days when i was that little nervous teenager that was invited in the mayor's office. she asked me what i was interested in, a shakespeare class i was talking. next day, a beautiful book, collective works of shakespeare, 300 pages, it hasn't been open. i did open the first page, there is the mayor of san francisco, dianne feinstein. i still proudly have that book on my bookshelf. i have been a fan since then. boy, do you get to know someone on a personal basis and work with them and you get to admire them more. i drive around this city, i kid you not, i see so much of the work that you probably don't know senator feinstein thas has done. a lot of work at hunter's point cleaning up the shipyards, dianne feinstein's fingerprints are on all of it. the work in transbay terminal, you see it right now, dia

we turn to former mayor willie brown an >> prepare for more painful cuts. >> we turned to willy brown and joe went and asked him if this looks like a budget you just might want to get out of town just as quick as you could. here was the mayor's take. >> no, and it's clearly reflective of a continuation of cut, cut, cut, that started with the recall of grey davis some years ago. brown is almost identical what would have had to happen in any administration. >> is he trying to hold voters hostage? some people say no. if you pass my tax in november, everything will be halfway okay, at least with education. if you don't, you're going to lose 3 1/2 weeks of school. >> absolutely. you rarely say my budget cuts money for the blind and schools and this is what we need to do. it's insane, but that's what he is essentially doing. this is what we have to do to this budget unless we raise more revenues. >> joe, the cuts on the blind and cuts on welfare and that collection of people on the medical side are legitimate cuts. but with schools, he's increasing k through 12, holding the university. but

and it was willie brown. and since that time -- [applause] >> i think it's fair to say that willie and i have been fast friends. and i watched him, three years in the california assembly, 15 years at speaker. those were the days when speakers didn't change every few years. it was the time when a speaker could do an agreement or even with a minority party, a speaker could find three or four votes. last time i talked to willie, we were talking about the budget and he said to me, oh, i would have known in january where there were three or four republican votes. and i believe him. i believe him. he is an incredible human being and so this man has walked the walk and talked the talk decade after decade. he was a fine mayor for this great city. like all of us, he served two full terms. he did his job and he is still doing his job. he is a great friend of everyone in this room. i hope you will warmly welcome the honorable former member -- former mayor, former speaker of the california assembly, the one and only will
