delia gonsalves is live outside the wilson building to tell us who is jumping in so far. wow, there is a lot, delia. >> reporter: just about everyone in the ward jumping into this race. 20 people as far as we know are all fighting for this job here at the wilson building. including some anc commissioners i've spoken to. some party leaders, even some political newcomers. one of them, kenyon mcduffy, a long-time civil rights advocate. he jumped the gun, filed his paperwork early and went to the board of elections yesterday. candidates need at least 500 signatures to be in the special election ballot to replace disgraced former council member harry thomas jr. who pled guilty to stealing city money for his own personal gain. he's likely to spend two to three years behind bars coincidentally, that's just about as long as the remainder of his term. whoever wins the special election will likely be in the council seat until 2014. they must unite to this now divided ward. >> the date of the special election for ward five that is open to all voters regardless of political party who

thomas did not show up for work here at the wilson building yesterday. he missed several votes including a vote on ethics legislation. thomas has been under investigation regarding $300,000 that was marked for youth sports programs. the city says thomas used that money to buy himself a luxury car and to take lavish trips. the fbi and irs confiscated a motorcycle and an suv during a raid on thomas' home last month. >> apparently what the feds are looking at is that there was an effort to launder this money and hide it. >> there is a lot of complex emotions at a time like this. but one thing i'm absolutely certain of is that councilmember thomas is now going to do the right thing. he may not have done the right thing. he may have done the very wrong thing but now, he will do the right thing by the people of the district of columbia. >> reporter: now, though thomas has not admitted to any wrongdoing, he did agree to pay the city back the $300,000. he missed the second payment of $50,000 that was due last week. i'm stacy cohan. back to you. >> thank you. >>>

a great admirer of woodrow wilson. when presidents are arrogant, they get themselves into big trouble, when democrat or republican. wilson was a brilliant man, but a bill arrogant, and refused to compromise. he thought he knew what he was doing as a progressive democrat, refused to really include republican representation on some of the most critical policies that the united states had ever engaged in. namely, of course, the creation of this new institution called the league of nations. this is an enormously important institution. and by ignoring republican representation with respect to his delegation to go to paris at the paris peace conference after world war i, but not including republicans, and then by refusing to compromise with the republican opposition, which wasn't just republican, by the way. there were democratic opposition too to some of the provisions of the treaty of versailles, he took an all or nothing attitude and as a consequence the united states never joined the league of nations and wilson's great
