and i believe this is woodrow wilson here. and in the caption that allender chose for this piece is, his last chance. so i think in this case she's talking about this is wilson's last chance to preserve democracy by saving this woman. but if you flip it over, a lot of these have allender's original notes. and in this case she's addressing this to the editor and saying, i am sure you can come up with a better caption than i have. so she's suggesting they need to think about the caption they want to use for this. and rethink what her recommendation is. this is one of the pieces that i mentioned where she uses color. so this is watercolor that she uses on here. and this is a fairly simple cartoon. it was published in 1919. the caption that she wrote is 31 more days, so they're showing the date and this would have been right around the time it would be published and she's demonstrating they only have 31 more days for a particular deadline to achieve their -- to perhaps get suffrage passed or get arguments held in congress or somet

i went to the wilson papers and i got out and there were two full manuscript boxes of letters that wilson had received during the nomination. and it was very interesting. 90%, of course, were praising him. the ones who were opposed to it, i think, i found one letter that mentioned that he was jewish, the rest was saying exactly what phillipa said, he's a radical and should not be on the court. i think we agree there was b antisemitism, if he wasn't a jew he wouldn't have been voted down but there wasn't that much. on the court, you have to be careful. he did, of course, to struck down the nra during the new deal but voted to support every other new deal measure even if he didn't like them. 4.1 said that he would vote against the widow, orphan, there was a third one, i don't remember what it was, if he thought, depending on the law. in his majority opinions, he like everybody else has to speak for a minimum of four other people. and so he wrote very careful, very short, these are the facts, this is the law. when you read his defense, that's where you get what i think jeff is talking about
