darla miles is in new windsor with new information tonight. darla? >> reporter: liz, several eyewitnesses told us this pilot was doing such a great job. it was so impressive many of them pulled out their cell phone to catch him practicing but then a piece of the plane calls off, the pilot took a nose dive and police say he didn't even have time to call for help. at first, it was a sneak peek into this upcoming weekend's new york air show until the single engine plane took a nose dive. >> i'm not sure whether the pilot just tried to get it out of the way. but he just got beyond to where people were out in a clearing in the area where there were treeing. and it just went straight down. >> reporter: several onlookers caught the tragedy on tape when a large piece of the tail broke off of this giles-202 in stewart international airport in new windsor. >> it is an acrobatic plane. it does very extensive maneuvers. i'm not sure why the tail went apart. that has to be investigated. >> at least 202 aircraft appeared to experience a structural failure. it went

tonight an investigation is underway to find out why this stunt plane went down in new windsor new york. the pilot was practicing tricks for a weekend air show. the aircraft had an apparent structural failure. it spins out of control, goes straight down, and crashed behind some trees. the pilot did not survive. >>> the man in the back of this police car here is accused of robbing a store, but he wasn't caught by officers. it was witnesses who chaised hi down and held him down until police arrived. tonight, he's charged with robbery and aggravated assault. he walked into the 11th and tree grocery. that's in south philadelphia. he pulled a gun. he demanded money, opened the register, grabbed what he could and ran. the store owner screamed for help and she got it. >> they were chasing and screaming, so i came out of the house. by the time i got there, they were already holding him down. >> reporter: that group held him down until police got there. police say they found a bebe gun in a bag that the man was carrying. >>> police are investigating an officer-involved shooting. they approached

what happened next is the pilot was able to make his way into a wooded area in new windsor where there are no homes. the pilot died, but nobody else was injured. i have to tell you it was beyond -- behind the crowd line, even though it was practice runs, there were plenty of pedestrians on the ground taking pictures that could have been hurt. but the pilot seemed to make his way into a wooded area where there was no property, no homes. we just finished a press conference with new york state police. here's what they had to say. >> looked like he lost a lot of maneuverability on the crash. it did not crash within the air field area. it crashed in a wooded area. there were no people or structures in the area. >> reporter: now, the new york state police have turned the investigation over to the ntsb, and they have not released the pilot's name yet. they're still waiting to notify his relatives of his death. if we have more information on that, we will bring it to you. we don't have his age or how many years he had been flying. back to you in the studio. ernie: all right. thank you very muc
