i've been in touch with a gentleman who now lives in winnipeg, who was a very small baby at the time. he was saved by his mother, a very feisty, resourceful woman who managed to fight her way up above decks and get the two of them onto a lifeboat. and there's also another lady, an american, who now lives in england, and she again was just a tiny baby at the time. and when the torpedo struck the ship, her nurse gathered this little baby up in her arms, wrapped her in a shawl around her neck, took her up on deck, couldn't find the parents anywhere. there was complete mayhem on deck in those last few minutes. and so she -- holding the baby 'round her neck, she just jumped over the side. and luckily, the nurse had very long sort of streaming auburn hair. somebody who was in a lifeboat put their hand into the water, grabbed the hair, pulled her up and got her and the baby into the boat. and the nice thing is that the nurse, who lived to over 100, and this old lady, audrey pearl, they remained friends for the whole of their life. and this old lady still rings me up from time to time. we don
