we are at winston-salem, north carolina, winston college.oin us as we go into the single sisters museum to learn a more -- learn more about the college's founding. it is known for being the oldest institution, educational institution for girls and women in the united dates. it was started here on the town square in 1772 as the little girls school. over the years it added high school classes, more rigorous classes and college classes. it is still going long early 250 years later. the school itself was founded by the town of salem. the moravians who originally came from europe and established churches in pennsylvania and then came down here in the 1750's in north carolina, they believed in education. not just for boys but unusually also for women and girls. the first girls school which was set up in 1772 was essentially devoted to teaching the girls selling,ad and write, sewing,anding -- understanding the bible. the first teachers for teens that came down from ethel m, pennsylvania. they came a few years before the school was established. the

we take you to north carolina's winston-salem. are here at state phillips african moravian church in winston-salem, north carolina where c-span is learning about local history. we learn about the hidden town project in old salem. projectidden town really stems from early research at old salem, about the narrative of the enslaved. old salem is interesting because it was one of the first history sites in north america to start to interpret the african-american narrative, it started in the late 80's, took up steam in the 90's. there was a lot of research done about the enslaved population. in december of 2016 we started a project called, hidden town. the reason for hidden town, because, in the 1990's when they started to do restoration of illip's, here in old salem, they found under the steps, slave tombstones that were taken out of the burial ground and hidden under the steps. when they did for the restoration work, they found some of these tombstones had been stacked and were holding up rotten floor joists. this notion of being hid
