i'm from hayward, wisconsin, a very, very small community in northern wisconsin. and my district is rural. and what you see is it's harder for small businesses to actually start up to expand, grow and create more jobs, not because they competitive environment is that much more difficult, but it's more challenging for small businesses to deal with all the rules and regulations that come from government. and when our government grows, when the rules and regulations grow to be in business, the small guys can't navigate that. if you're a big business, you have the economies of scale to deal with big government. but if you're the small guy, the rules and regulations have a dramatic impact on you. and if you look at our communities, multinational corporations aren't really moving into central and northern wisconsin. and often hundreds of jobs. it's the small business guys who are who are growing and expanding and fighting every day to stay in business. that employer families. and they're the ones that are under attack by this new massive government growth. and so if we

and wisconsin our wages are up and unemployment is down but we have more jobs in wisconsin that wes haveople to fill the jo. that is a success story of american capitalism. i am proud of that. though everybody may not agree that it has been those policies have created it in some of those are on the left. when they dig deep in their heart they cannot deny that what we have done is made their lives better. so often in my district the forgotten men and women. men and women who feel like people come to this chamber, to this town engage in debate that is irrelevant. in debate that do not make their lives better put this going to improve their economy.yb maybe it's a debate that might improve the coast or global corporations. it is a debate that is not hurt help their rule small-town community they have seen of the last few years the voices have been heard. their pain has been heard and it has been addressed. for that they are incredibly grateful. when you shop at walmart and have a hard time figuring out where you are going to get the dollars to pay your mortgage or how you're going to send y

there was a super majority in wisconsin, the supreme court of wisconsin was diabolically making changese governor. how did you turn that situation around? >> so republicans took over wisconsin in 2010, and immediately smashed to unions, suppress voting rights, gerrymandered the living daylights out of legislative maps to make sure they never would lose power even if voters try to throw them out. and for years, it looked as though wisconsin was going to fall off the cliff, be a state where republicans controlled everything, whether voters liked it or not. >> jon: and democratically so because through all those methods, like what new york some of the democrats in your try to do was gerrymander it even if it was closer than it should be. those were the methods they undertook. >> 2012, 2018, democrats won the majority of the votes for the legislators. republicans got almost two-thirds of the seats. in 2018, i volunteered, governor ebert's -- now governor evers ran in a land slide, he won by 1.1 percentage point. super, super close. it was like we grab a branch as we are falling, falling off

wisconsin was a very heavily gerrymandered state.had a powerful republican majority, and now we have more competitive maps. i'm hopeful. this is an issue where americans actually agree. we are not as divided as our politicians would have us believe. the vast majority of americans want to see common sense reforms to prevent tragedies like this one. and my hope is that now we'll have republicans ready to accept our hands, the democrats' hands that have been extended on this issue, and say, yeah, we accept, we don't want it to happen here. and it's, you know, obviously school shootings are horrific for so many reasons, but we also have crisis in suicide, and the vast majority of suicides are done with a firearm. so there are a lot of reasons why we should be taking action on this, and a lot of things that we could do to help reduce firearm injuries and deaths, and it's just a matter of americans saying, yeah, we're going to actually do what our constituents demand and deserve, and take that step to make wisconsin a safe place for everyo

now in madison, wisconsin. so as i said, the suspect believed to be a student, a juvenile also killed here. four other victims. and we have yet to learn the breakdown of how many were students? how many were teachers? we know that at least one of them is potentially a teacher, because that's what the chief told me. they believe that a teacher was fatally wounded as well. so now we wait to hear more, obviously, and we wait to deal with another community yet again. having to deal with such a tragedy. yeah. as you said, everyone is a victim here. this school is k through 12 little kids, big kids, all of them kids. and this is what these almost 400 children right before their holiday break have encountered today there in madison, wisconsin. and we should note it was just about 90 minutes ago that police were responding to this. so they are very much in the throes of notifying parents. shimon. yeah. and the other thing we have to remember, you know what this you know, so many other parents now who have suffered thro

i have been very impressed with your leadership in wisconsin. remind me of a few former chairman and my party who understood the importance of not just the end game, winning the election, but the process to get there and set it up. you did an interview with vanity fair in which you noted a lot of voters are only hearing about democrats and republicans. and when that is the case, they will always get the most republican caricature that can be mustered. there is a significant challenge to make sure democrats are telling their own story. that was part of your keys to laying out that the party right now, the brand, is broken. it is something i understood when i inherited the rnc leadership in 2009, that the brand was broken. how do you approach a potential chairmanship of the democratic party with respect to a 50 state strategy versus a wing state focus. a grassroots bottom. you win elections not just top- down but bottom-up. how do you see this process unfolding for a new democratic party under your leadership? >> mr. chairman, great to be with you

what can democrats learn from wisconsin in general? >> wisconsin has been a state that if you look nationally has voted more republican than the national average in 2016, in 2020. wisconsin is a whiter, more rural working class state. often that nationally has meant states moving republican. this time we actually voted more for harris than the national average. we had the smallest swing towards trump of any battleground state. the reason for that is that we turned out more voters for harris who voted for baldwin than we had for biden in 2020. there were more voters who turned out and supported donald trump in this election, so he won by less than 1 percentage point in this state. both sides saw their vote count go up. 50,000 people more than that who voted for trump didn't vote for republicans down ballot. they did not have an integrated campaigning machine. we won our u.s. senate race and flipped 14 state legislative seats on the maps, thanks to supreme court ictories. communicate in every community and talk about issues, it can make

the fourth one of the day on the school shooting that happened today in madison, wisconsin. few headlines that we got from him there, including it was a second grade student who called 911 at 10:57 a.m. this morning, local time, to report a school shooting was happening at the abundant life christian school. that student called at 1057. by 1105, police were on the scene and the shooter was down. we have now learned from authorities for the first time, confirming the name of that school shooter that was 15 years old. her name was samantha rupp now, natalie rupp now. but she went by samantha. she was 15 years old, not 17 as previously reported. she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. so, of course, two others were also killed at that shooting today. earlier, we have heard that police searched her home earlier tonight. they are still working to determine a motive and said a document that has been circulating online that has been attributed to her has not yet been verified by the authorities. i'm joined now by the former fbi deputy fbi director andrew mccabe, as
