i graduated in law school in 1975 and half my graduate class was wittman. not very -- was half of my graduating class were women. in law school, a good chunk of the class were women. in many places i have worked, there were a good number of women and a fair number of minorities. i would not feel comfortable on a court with all white guys. i would not know how to operate. when i say that, i mean me and my colleagues my age. i cannot imagine any other way it could be. i fight with my male colleagues and i fight with my female colleagues and i kiss and make up with my male and female colleagues. i don't think sex or race difference are good points for the lack of collegiality. i think that is nonsense. every time i hear some of the old-time judges talk about the good old days when they used to go to lunch together, i think i was glad i was not a judge back then. so i got back in touch with dan wittman and i asked him for more information. he said well, i have all the writeups that i did, and rewards for all my min. some got awards and other student that i can send you all of my writeups. i said sure, please do. and he did. lo and behold, he had written one of his boat captains up for a bronze star for that very ambush. and in the right up it said that the ambush was on december 5. so now i had the date. along the way, general 12 natonski had given me a powerpoint presentation that he gave after coming back from oif to end in that was a very extensive order of battle. and it had everybody that was in the first marine division in operations. and it showed that the 2nd brigade of the 2nd infantry division was involved. an army unit, the 2nd infantry division who are very very proud of their association with the marines, the teens team said they served under general lejeune in world war i. so, one of the people that i decided i was going to interview with colonel gary patton who was the 2nd brigade combat team commanding o

definitely accepted although i once taught a course at rutgers with a male colleague and we were doing wittmanand dickinson and when it came to dickinson he said i just can't read the little bitty poems. i don't want to bother with that. so there are still a few throwbacks. teachers though entered american history as a bestseller, as a pulled fiction writer. somebody who rode important fiction and had a huge a store quintet but not as an artist. one of the things i've tried to do in my book is to contest that attitude. we don't have an american jane austen. we don't have a 19th century woman novelist to have the same status so i think that has to be challenged and we have to say look, there are all these women writers producing artistically significant work who just never got the attention that they deserved and need to dismantle that. so i think if you read reviews in england now, they won't be quite the same imbalance that there is an american reviewing and there are a lot more venues for book reviewing in great britain than that are in the united states. you get a lot more different voices
