one hype piece of the all star game that will be missing this year is the wnba and nba shootout. last year, steph curry went head to head with new york liberty player and walnut creek native serena ionescu. curry won that matchup, and fans were hoping and believe ionescu may come back this year for a rematch. organizers, though, confirmed that will not be happening. the event is canceled. nba leaders say they were not able to figure out a plan that would top last year's shootout, and they wanted to focus on the new format this year, which is a four team mini tournament. while a lot of focus may on men's basketball this all-star weekend, today women leaders in sports are shining a light on the game on the change. their games are creating. wnba commissioner cathy engelbert, valkyrie's president jess smith and cal women's basketball head coach charmin smith led a panel discussion in a private event hosted by the bay area host committee, who we partnered with. the sports leaders highlighted previous challenges of getting investors tv airtime and an overall appreciation for women's sp

this is also a huge weekend and big exposure for the wnba and the golden state valkyries. this is our new team. i spent some time with the valkyries new head coach. there she is, natalie nakase. they'll play here at chase center, but their practice facility, what you're looking at now is in downtown oakland. they renovated the warriors old facility. get this already. the valkyries have nearly 22,000 season ticket deposits. everyone wants to play in a packed arena like no one want to play in. you know, a place where there's just crickets. so, yeah, i'm excited, and they're part of our family. fan base becomes a part of our family. i'm sure you've looked at the stats, have been told that expansion teams in any sport usually stink. yeah. how do you change that? so the golden knights in vegas, that's that's one of the few exceptions. there you go. the golden knights in vegas. and i think it's everyone's opinion from the outside. no one knows how much work has been up there. no one knows how much film we've watched, no one knows how much we do. and so for me, i know we're going

golden state valkyries unveiled the team's new state of the art performance center, where the new wnba team will practice. we're going to build what i believe will be the greatest and honestly most valuable women's sports organization anywhere in the world. the nearly 32,000 square foot training facility was once the warriors headquarters. the facility will be used all year round, giving players access to weight and locker rooms, training rooms, hydrotherapy and more. this building has history, right? championships were figured out inside this building through blood, sweat and tears. it will also serve as a community space for youth basketball programs. the organization says the location is an intentional move to continue investing in oakland's economy. this is home for us, our front office, our every day we're here. so this is our city where we're going out to lunch, grabbing our coffees and teas in the afternoon and building community. the unveiling comes a week before nba all star, where events will be split between san francisco and oakland, bringing tens of thousands of fans to bo
