reporter gus rosendale of wnbc tv is on the scene of the accident now. gus, what do we know about this accident? >> reporter: lawrence, police are here on scene trying to piece together what happened. what we're hearing from law enforcement sources is simon was riding in the back of a lincoln town car. apparently that car sideswiped a mercedes. the town car lost control and smashed into a number of pilings in the middle of the road here protecting people on the cross walk. we understand that firefighters had to cut the roof of the town car open to get access to the driver and to simon. the 73-year-old correspondent was rushed to the hospital, where he was initially going to be treated for his injuries and he passed away soon after that. >> gus, thank you very much. >>> again, long-time cbs news correspondent bob simon has died tonight in an automobile accident on the west side highway. he got started at cbs in 1967. he covered the vietnam war and covered stories all over the world for cbs and for "60 minutes." bob simon was 73. ♪ there's confidence. then

joining me now by phone, from the crash site is wnbc reporter gus rosendale., what's the latest there? >> reporter: lawrence the nta said the female driver of the jeep was outside of her car when she was hit and killed instantly. what we're hearing from passengers inside the train, the ones in the rear cars file a slight jolt. but a man in the fourth car said he felt an enormous crash, and very soon after, the train cared started to fill with smoke. there was a brief announcement from the conductor, and essentially radio silence. so you have this commuter trained, a lot of people were standing on board, and then hundreds were forced to smash windows and jump down to the ground outside. as they got out of the train, they saw that that vehicle had been hit by the train and pushed back essentially ten car lengths. as that happened it burst into flames and it was creating the devastating damage we saw here. >> how long of a line of sight did the train operator have on the vehicle? >> reporter: it's somewhat unclear at this point. i don't know how fast the train wa

joining me on the phone is wnbc reporter gus rosendale at the scene. describe to me how this played out before your eyes. >> well betty, good evening. you know, we got to the scene, hundreds of people on board that train were till in the process of getting reunited with their families. when's going on right now is ntsb go team on the way here. governor cuomo on scene giving us an update. big question is what was this truck doing the the crossing? stuck there? placing there? we don't know. as described it the female driver had been seen in and out of that vehicle. one report had her out of vehicle just as the train struck killing her instantly. and six people on board. the death toll now at seven. just a little while ago we heard from the mta an they investigate the accident. obviously have the human tragedy, first and foremost and there is also a logistical challenge ahead of this. this is one of the most used commuter railroads in the country. hundreds of thousands of people depend on it to get to the city every day an a major stretch shut down and a
