ray vieta is here from other affiliate wnbc is here with more. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. investigators are on the water. we know the identity of the pilot. 56-year-old william gordon. he was here for an air show this weekend. something went wrong. the plane circled and smoked and then crashed in the hudson river. the moment of impact caught on tape. >> all of a sudden, it hit the water and in seconds it went down. >> reporter: a vintage world war ii plane, a p-37 thunder bolt. expected to be part of a long island air show this weekend, crashed into the hudson river friday night off the edge of manhattan. >> the pilot come up. all of a sudden, the plane went down and he never came up. >> we saw it splashing into the water. disappeared. >> reporter: the coast guard and fire and rescue from new york and new jersey scrambling to the scene. in search of the 56-year-old pilot. he's seen here in a recent photo. a good samaritan from a passing sailboat jumped into the river to help, but unfortunately, the one seater plane went under quickly. the search for the pilot went through

. >> katherine creag from wnbc in harlem. thank you. >>> 5:48. happening today, d.c. first responders will take part in the multi-location full scale emergency preparedness exercise. officials say it's not related to any specific event. kristin wright is live outside of medstar georgetown university hospital center. kristin, what exactly are first responders going to do today? >> reporter: well, patients, so to speak, from a train derailment will be brought here to the hospital for treatment and decontamination. so of course we have seen it before, it was just a few weeks ago that a freight train jumped the tracks in northeast near station. nobody was hurt but that is a residential neighborhood and easily could have been so much worse. district officials say today's full scale emergency preparedness drill was actually planned before the northeast derailment. so here's the scenario. the train collides with a vehicle. the train derails and spills hazardous chemicals. the exercise will test and evaluate the response by first responders across the various district agencie
