i'm wolf blitzer. we have breaking news about golfer tiger woods involved in a serious accident and taken to surgery for leg injuries. let's go to cnn's nick watt, who is in los angeles for us. give us the latest. what are you picking up? >> reporter: well, wolf, what we're hearing from officials here is that tiger woods was driving on a downhill stretch of road, a winding piece of road where officials say it is possible to pick up a lot of speed just through momentum. he crossed over the median of the road, over the curb and rolled that suv in shrubs by the roadside. he is, as far as we know, still in a hospital about eight miles away from that crash scene. his agent told golf digest magazine he's suffering from multiple leg injuries and, as you mentioned, has either undergone surgery or is still in surgery. now we've got a few more details from the l.a. sheriff's department, speaking with kcbs. the injuries to tiger woods, they say, are nonlife threatening. they believe he was conscious when official

>> hi there, wolf.navalny was sentenced to the two and a half and more years in jail, his supporters called on the people that support alexey navalny to come to the area around the kremlin. the russian authorities and vladimir putin had something waiting for them and the entire kremlin were surrounded by russian riot police and they sent squads of riot police into the streets around here that then detained almost anybody that they could find. we ourselves witnessed dozens of detentions. we saw some of those folks out here and treated very harshly by the riot police in total. i just got the recent number, wolf. more than a thousand people today detained in moscow in the russian capital alone and that's according to independent organizations. it certainly came after a remarkable trial that took place in a moscow court where alexey navalny, as he spoke, ripped into vladimir putin calling him putin the poisoner and that is what he will be remembered as. he called the trial that happened here a sham trial. s

>> reporter: not just tough things, wolf.mplied from the senate floor that the former president could easily be prosecuted for his role in the january 6th riot. that came as mcconnell was trying to make the case for why he did not vote to convict former president trump during that second impeachment trial but he was pretty clear in his implication in those remarks. and people that we've spoken to around mcconnell since then have said that was on purpose. that he was so clear. saying there was a chance trump could still be prosecuted and that mcconnell believed it was up to those jurisdictions to take care of former president trump in that way. so to hear him say even if the former president is the republican nominee for president in 2024 would you support him, he said, quote, absolutely there. one thing to note right before that he was speaking with fox news, he said he believes multiple members of his party are going to run for that nomination saying it is going to be quite competitive and a lot of fun for people to cover. o

>> it's very clear, wolf. the president has decided to trade a washington conversation for an american conversation, talking in powerful terms that americans are on the brink, many of them are losing hope and he believes it's best to go big and not get bogged down with republicans if they're not willing to come anywhere near where he is. he's also trading his own dna, history of bipartisanship, for the history of the moment. he keeps remembering his days in the obama administration, that stimulus plan in 2009. they waited for republican votes, only got a few and decided in the end it was way too small. joe biden, president biden's calculation is we have power right now. let's go big. as long as democrats stay unified, we can do this. the jobs report convinced him that the economy is in a ditch and needs help. 2010, when republicans seized control of the house and the obama administration essentially hit the brakes, the republicans had more power to stop president obama. democrats have power at least two years.
