wolf, that vote is ongoing. we will watch it closely and we will let you know what the final vote is once all the votes are cast. >> on that note, ryan, some democrats, some progressives, some democrats in the senate and the house, they believe the white house, the president, the vice president have not necessarily done all they could to get this passed. what are you hearing on that front? >> that's absolutely right. i talked to a progressive member of the house of representatives today of new york. he's a freshman democrat. he said that he is disappointed that president biden himself has not done enough to be actively involved in this conversation. he said that the president hasn't said enough publically about his desire to see voting rights being passed. he believes it is the president that should be encouraging the moderate senate democrats who are unwilling to break up the filibuster, he should be encouraging them to take that step. he believes it is imperative to do so because this is the most important pie

so we're at six days now, wolf, roughly.undaries of even some of the more longer term sort of rescues. we're at that point. there's so many factors, again, as you talked about with people, the weather. status of the person at the time that the collapse happened, access to water. all these things matter, type of collapse, you talked about the type of collapse, what happens. in haiti, there are different types of collapses that happen in that massive earthquake, these terms that give you a sense of are there spaces in the rubble someone could survive, voids so to speak, with the type of pancake collapse where you lose all of the structural support at all four corners, that's harder, harder to find voids in those areas. again, wolf, it is conjecture. i know it is still a search and rescue mission. again from some of your reporting today. you know what the statistics show at this point. >> the statistics are not good. and you've done so much research in this area, sanjay. how long could a person potentially survive maybe in that

wolf, it's getting more desperate by the hour. and this big revelation today, which is not going to come as any comfort to anybody on the ground there that an engineer warned three years ago that there were major structural issues with the building. wolf, that is devastating news. >> reporter: it's devastating, and it's so heartbreaking to so many of the families, loved ones who are gathered, waiting, hoping, and praying right now. experts say it may take months to get to the bottom of what happened here in surfside, florida. back in 2018, managers were urged to make repairs and we understand that work was set to begin soon. we're going to have much more on that coming up in a few moments. but let's begin with the late-breaking developments on the rescue efforts. fires and rain are making this very difficult for emergency responders. cnn's randi kaye is near where crews are continuing their search for survivors. randi, you've been here for quite a while. update our viewers on the very latest. >> reporter: for the last few days, wo

i'm wolf blitzer. we're live here in surfside, florida at the site of the deady condo collapse and we begin this hour with breaking news. we'll guest an update on the search and rescue effort now in the sixth day. 11 people confirmed dead, 150 other people are still unaccounted for. and it is becoming increasingly clear that a number of warning signs were missed or were totally ignored. cnn has obtained a letter from the president of the condo board written back in april, not that long ago, that warned the building's conditions had deteriorated significantly in the three years since an engineer's report highlighted major structural damage. also new today, the "miami-herald" reports that a cond tractor who serviced the pool 36 hours before the collapse saw standing wautter a cracks under the pool deck and the white house confirmed that president biden and the first lady dr. jill biden will travel here to surfside on thursday. we'll have extensive live coverage of that. let's begin our coverage this hour

>> wolf, thank you for the opportunity. and obviously, that's something the town of surfside, along with the county. they have oversight with regards to building inspections. building certifications. and so, i think the important thing is not really to hone in, at this point. we are focused -- continues to be search and rescue. there will be ample time to sort through all the reasons, the points of information. where did they come to? why was there not action taken? we want those answers taken just as quickly as those family members from our perspective. but we want to continue to focus on the search and rescue. i think that's priority-number one. while the investigation's -- all the structural engineers continue to do their work. >> you are absolutely right. that certainly is priority number one. but a quick followup, if i can, lieutenant governor. three years after that warning, repairs were only now just beginning to be scheduled. seeing the damage, now, that -- and the loss of life. how should major-repair issues on a h

>> reporter: they are not giving up, wolf. they're working in these 15-minute shifts, but they really have to be pulled off the job, pulled off that pile. they're so determined to find survivors. the mayor said they're committed to try to find anything who could still be alive, and the obstacles that they're dealing with are quite something. they have debris falling on them, plus they have fires breaking out. there's a deep fire that's been burning in the rubble pile today. they've been trying to work with that. they built that trench, using heavy equipment to get down there and isolate the fire. they're trying to find some of these survivors in some of the safer pockets. the fire has been spreading rapidly. they're using foam on it, some water, and some infrared technology. the numbers, that tells the story here. four people dead. 159 still unaccounted for. i spoke to a rabbi who has a synagogue up the road. he said at least 20 people associated with his synagogue are missing third quarter range in age from 20 to 60 years old

wolf? >> thanks very much, fred. this is a really, really depressing situation that's unfolding right now. the numbers keep rising as far as the death toll as you just reported is concerned. and the families are clearly distraught as this search and rescue operation continues. brian todd is at the scene of the search and rescue effort that's underway. brian, we heard from the mayor earlier today with some very, very somber tones. >> that's right, wolf. this search effort is dangerous. it is painstaking. it is heart breaking. they're still going at it very hard at this hour. as you and fredricka reported, the death toll now stands at nine. 156 people remain unaccounted. the fire officials are saying there is no time limit on when the research and rescue operation is going to turn into a search and recovery operation. but we did get some additional details in a news conference a short time ago today. the miami dade mayor talked about this trench they are digging that seems to be massive, and that has yielded some disco

you know, wolf, i was thinking a lot about that.n i was down there, you know, you sort of had three things happening simultaneously. the rescue efforts were underway. you had the fires that were sort of internal fires that required a pretty constant supply of water being sprayed on to the rubble. and there were rain showers. what i saw, and i'm sure you saw this as well. overall, obviously, having access to water in some ways would be good if somebody were still trapped and able to get access that way. that's good. but overall, it seems to greatly slow down the overall progress of the workers. when you have significant rainfall, especially if there's thunder and lightning involved. so on balance, maybe not as helpful. but clearly, any way you can get water which they've been doing, spraying the water on to the rubble, could make a difference. >> it certainly could. all right. thank you very much. dr. sanjay gupta has covered these kinds of stories over many years. erika, i got to tell you, i've been here for a few days. it doesn't g
