welcome to our wonderful city hall.of san francisco. no many of you know, too, there has been a lot of spotlight on our arab-american countries. people are wondering what it is that is going on. the whole world is struggling to find out what the right thing to think and do and understand is. here in san francisco, we have a tradition, especially when it comes to immigrants -- comes to emigrants, who they are, where they come from, and what they want to do. that's the beauty of being here in san francisco. it happened to my heritage. it's happened to many, many generations of visitors who come to this city. now it's happening for your generations of arab americans. it's our pleasure, and as the mayor of our great city -- i know it is felt at the board of supervisors that we welcome and celebrate our diversity. we do our best to understand, to dialogue, and to create more understanding. we celebrate that. that is our strength in san francisco. that's why we have these wonderful celebrations. thank you to the ensemble for

coming here and then getting to know what you did for this wonderful city. as i decided to embark on this wonderful journey, your endorsement was so wonderful. i will never forget you for that. i will be there for you, what ever you need. carlos moreno is someone that i have a very special place in my heart. carlos came from east l.a., at a place that i grew up in, and very familiar with, and a place that will always be close to my heart. not only did noi know about cars as an accomplished attorney, but he was a great friend of al a -- l.a. there was a great deal of segregation in the lapd, but moving forward, he came to us to make sure that we had a different place, an organization that reflected the communities that we served. a place where hispanic americans, african-americans, women, many others in the organization, would have an opportunity to rise based on their own excellence. it was then that i really got to know carlos and admired what he did. frankly, when this opportunity came, carlos was one of the first people i called. i said, can i have your en

i will measure my success by the safety of each street corner and alley in this wonderful city. [applause] every dollar we spend a locking up someone is a dollar that could have been spent on our schools and recreation centers. these are tough times with limited resources, and i will be thoughtful about how and when we use them. after 30 years in law enforcement, i have seen people who are extremely dangerous, but many more who are misguided. we can no longer afford to lock up those that are in demand -- for safety. it does not work, it doesn't make us safer, and we cannot afford it. instead, we must work to make better solutions to save those people, to save their faith come at and energy of the criminal- justice system, for those that are truly dangerous. we must be certain people committing rapes, murders, and other violent and serious offenses are series brought to justice and prevented from harming others. you have my commitment that i will approach our criminal justice system with a surgical component. we have an incredible opportunity to do things differently, here in san

city government. ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the hon. edwin m. lee, the mayor of san francisco. [applause] mayor lee: thank you. thank you for that wonderfulroduction and thank you for being here. it is the seventh annual celebration. sydney already explained our history, what president carter did for us, and what we are doing for ourselves, joining the whole city and region in celebrating asian-pacific portage month. i am so grateful to the board of supervisors for this whole four months of leaving this great city. i will say once again as i have said through many corners of the city, whether it is a town hall meeting or just your regular family association dinner, the hundreds i have been too -- i really feel proud of our asian community as a whole for allowing me to serve this great city and for all the years of struggle and coordinating and push to keep the doors of government open and to keep opportunities for many generations of asians to serve this wonderful city. thank you. i continue to thank the board of supervisors for this historic vote that happened in january. saying that, i want to kick off the celebration by doing the appro

[applause] >> good afternoon. i am a member of the san francisco police commission and a staff attorney at the asian law caucus. i am honored to be here today. first, i would like to congratulate ross mirkarimi, our [applause] let me tell you a little bit about our next sheriff. he was born in chicago to a person american father and a jewish russian-american mother. he has the pleasure of her being here today. nancy, if you could please stand up and say hello to everyone? that would be wonderful. [applause] sheriff mirkarimi graduated from the san francisco police academy and was president of his class after moving to san francisco over 28 years ago. prior to being elected to the board of supervisors, he served in the san francisco district attorney's office, investigating white-collar crime. as a member -- yes, please. [applause] as a member of the board of supervisors, sheriff mirkarimi has been an outspoken adv

[laughter] it is a wonderful city, it really is. it is a question of learning to adapt to the local culture. for example, you would never say out loud in miami, i do not know, i think you have to admit that castro has done some good for cuba. [laughter] anyway, what ever you have heard, disregard. it is a great town. we have a new attitude out there. the tourism motto is to come back to miami, we were not shooting at you. [laughter] i want to tell you quickly about my career. i have been a humor writer most of my life. i started out as a regular reporter. i worked at a little leaguer in pennsylvania called the daily local news. very small town paper. not the best edited paper. we once ran a headline that said women would be raped. [laughter] but that is where i got my start in journalism. i was not great at reporting. i was an english major and went into journalism because i wanted to write, but i learned that writing is not the key skill in journalism. talking to people is the key skill. sometimes you have to talk to people who are

this will allow san francisco to showcase and interest to this wonderful city with this beautiful cruise terminal. staff has done a tremendous amount of work. this is the fourth time around for the cruise terminal. very hopeful that we can get it completed. thank you. commissioner brandon: thank you. >> good morning. i am with bay delta maritime, a tugboat company. i am speaking just to support the yes vote for the terminal. we have been a company here for about 30 years, supporting the rich maritime history that the day has, and i think the world class terminal will really represent the work itself well -- represent the port itself well. cruising is becoming more and more and avenue of tourism as it grows, and i think our city has always enjoyed a lot of revenue from tourism and a lot of respect around the world as people have come to visit our city. the terminal we have now does not reflect what is san francisco, to be honest. as people see and come through that gateway, and improve terminal, i think, would go a long way to facilitate that. for us, for a smaller company, we employ 30 p

[applause] we have clearly a good and growing balance of women, on the board of supervisors, commissioners, and department heads as well. i'm extremely proud to be heading up this very complicated city. [laughter] one that does not let me sleep very much, but certainly it -- i have said this in many cases, just literally these eight weeks i have fallen in love with this city even deeper because it is such a wonderful place to be. every community i visit, every corridor that we walk together, it fascinates me house on many other people who live and work here -- but even those who don't -- just love this city and they do what they can to make sure that it is running well. it is very natural that as i am thrust with the responsibility of being mayor, that i look for talent, and i think a lot of the talent is with the women of san francisco. [applause] it has been my pleasure, of course, to have been an employee of this wonderful government some 22 years now. but to take you back, i had th

fellowship, youth warriors also has the opportunity to meet other youth leaders throughout the city and share the wonderful work they are doing to run the city. this past thursday, the youth warriors and a group of leaders went to sacramento to our state capital to meet with our elected officials to talk about the community work we are doing. the warriors had an opportunity to get involved in the political process and have their voices heard on the city and state level. the department of children, youth, and their families, is proud to be working with such wonderful and inspiring youth. now i would like to introduce the director of the department of children, youth, and their families. she has been an advocate of the use or your award and fellowship. please give her a werround of applause. petersburg is a wonderful city.e wonderful parks, you have birds sitting until tree, manatees in the water, pelicans. it's this little paradise on earth. so there's not a big problem to solve, but still there's this almost like rooted in the dna of the city, it's this idea that the pier is where the whole city comes together to meet, so in this case, rather than solving a problem we had to sort of try to create a potential for something new. instead of dumping some arbitrary building at the end of the pier we thought what if the pier itself could come out of the water and become its own pavilion, the pavilion where all the citizens can gather. in some way it also creates this sort of magical draw. >> we imagine the flow of people come together in the wave walk. a series of activities that brings daily life in more direct contact with the water. >> i like it a lot. i like the lights and how it reflects on the water and the circular movement of the whole thing. really pretty. >> it's iconic. you look at it, it's disti
