[applause] this is our 50th anniversary of the wonderful song, "i left my heart in san francisco." tony, it is wonderful for you to be here and grace us and honor us with your presence. your 17 grammys are just so unprecedented. you just won two more this past week, and what a wonderful career. congratulations, tony. i want to thank our school of the arts. i want to thank our boys and girls choruses. thank you. wonderful performances. it is a fitting tribute that our boys and girls choruses and ouryouth -- our yout are here today to perform because they reflect tony's dedicated career to ensure the future of arts education. we have seen what he has done and seen what his support is, and he is encouraging youth to be leaders

but also, the job i was appointed to, city administrator, because that has been wonderful for me, to he affairs of a great city, and to know it is made up not only of numerous, wonderful neighborhoods, not only a high number of attractive commercial and residential corridors, but also the city i have come to appreciate even more as mayor, a city that is international in stature. one that resonates with so many people across the world. it is about what we represent. and that representation is not easy to explain at times,, but it begins with a very prominent after it, and that is because our city is so diverse. i am a product of that. i will continue to make sure the doors are open to anyone who wants to serve this great city, anyone who wants to show their love for it. i will continue doing that. it is because of its international stature, our city of san francisco enjoys being the attraction for the whole bay area. when companies or visitors are deciding where they want to spend their money or make an investment or have a good time, they will think of san francisco in some any positi

join all of you today to kick off this very important event, the 2012 black history month in our wonderful citycity for the 100%. everybody gets to live in our city and live with dignity. that is what i am going to be doing in all my years is making sure everyone can be here. [applause] we are recognizing the celebrates the spirit of our african-american experience, the contributions that everyone has made to our great city to make sure it is a diversity. that is why i moved here. it is why you moved here. that is why so many of her friends decided it would make their mark here in our city because of our diversity. this year's theme could be no less important. black women and american history and culture. absolutely. and it is particularly poignant that it highlights african- americans experiences through their patriotism, through their labor, leadership, motherhood, intellect, and artistic expression. all of us regardless of ethnic origin or social and economic background have benefited from the contributions of these women. in the american culture, menino of the historical accomplishments of

that's the real performance, because when we do that, and we do that with our city money in wonderful places like this park as you see today under construction with rec and park, we have the commitments of our own folks in our city believing this program works for them, a lot of other things take care of themselves. and there is not only hope, there is real progress going on in the city and i am very, very proud of people who have faith in our government to get into these programs and help change their lives. it also makes other announcements that much more significant. as we gain the success of this 34%, we can can now have a dialogue around other projects that are forthcoming and in the works, projects that other departments are excited to bring into this fold, projects that we know will result after we pass the parks fund in november, right, supervisor? yeah. you know because the public now sees there is a direct benefit when our residents work off these wonderful projects that we pass where we're willing to tax ourselves to get the revenue, but we see the actual benefit in the mor

the strength of the city as a great tourist city that maybe not that affordable to too many people and how we can get more folks to come and experience the wonder of the city. and then hopefully they make their stake here. these panel members of decided to make their stake here. they risk reputation, may be small amounts of money, because of the had a lot of money, they may not have had to start this. but they have also, i think, done it for the right reasons. they want to experience this city in a very different way, but one that i think is in the tradition of san francisco and is reflective of mind, welcoming more people here to share in this economy. and hopefully for the right reasons, we create more jobs, get more entrepreneurs involved in the success and richness of this city. i have often said this city can be the city for the 100%. that is, everybody can have a chance to fulfil their dreams and make sure they can have a stable economy for themselves and for their families. i think we're on the verge of discussing things that would invite other members of our city family, our department heads of that work in the tax section or in plannin

petersburg is a wonderful city.ou have wonderful parks, birds singing in the trees, manatees in the water, pelicans. so it's like this little paradise on earth. so there's not a big problem to solve, but still there's this almost like rooted in the dna of the city is this idea that the pier is where the whole city comes together to meet. so in this case, rather than solving a problem, we had to sort of try to create a potential for something new. instead of dumping some arbitrary building at the end of the pier, we thought what if the pier itself could simply come out of the water and become its own pavilion, a pavilion where all the citizens could gather. and it creates this sort of magical draw. can you imagine the flow of people comes together and the whole series of activities it brings daily life in more direct contact with the water. >> i like it a lot. i like the lights and how it reflects on the water and the circular movement of the whole thing. really pretty. >> it's iconic. you look at it. it's distinctiv

[laughter] i want to tell you quickly about my career. i have been a humor writer most of my life. i started out as a regular reporter. i worked at a little leaguer in pennsylvania called the daily local news. very small town paper. not the best edited paper. we once ran a headline that said women would be raped. [laughter] but that is where i got my start in journalism. i was not great at reporting. i was an english major and went into journalism because i wanted to write, but i learned that writing is not the key skill in journalism. talking to people is the key skill. sometimes you have to talk to people who are

dinners in the community, who are going to get their friends to come and visit them in our wonderful great city who will live their lives proudly with their investments, whether it's a family or a small business or their own work right in our own city. we have done that because the board and the mayor's office decided quite a while ago that we're going to cooperate on local hire. we're going to make this happen for ourselves and we're going to make sure we hold ourselves accountable. so not only is this report important, not only is the review steps important and the collaboration, but we're going beyond that. we're setting more goals. towards the end of this month, the goal turns to 25%. a year after that, it's up again because we continue to hold ourselves accountable and we know now that it works, that it can work even better. we can get more people. we can double this group behind us next year. we'll have more smiling faces, more people paying taxes, more kids in our schools with hope that they can come out and get good jobs in this city. i also want to make two more announcements. as this,

city. to have so many companies gathering and then to announce this great award, the clean debt capital north america. this is a wonderful award for our city. it is not just the award we are enthusiastic about. i am in it is a bad -- enthusiastic about all the efforts in getting that award. there are so many people who put faith in our city. and i call it investor confidence, because that is what we really need to build, a new industry of investor confidence in the city that is really centered around our a very human thought here, and that is something that i think keeps the city so alive. that is that we want to leave this world, no matter what we are in. i am in government right now. i know so many people in business and others, and we want to leave this city in the next generation better than what it is today. that is a goal. that is a goal that should hit every single industry in the city, from tourism to the medical field to all the clean tech industries we are inviting in. that if we can say to our generation and to my kids that i am going to use my time to make sure that every aspect of the city, whether it is was

it is one of the few cities to have its own asian art museum. that is a wonderful reflection of our city's commitment to not only the history of the population and growth and ties to the far east, but also honors the diverse art we have in the city. so many museums are looking at how they can contribute to not only the residents here, but what i think the nation is on course to do, something that i know charlotte and i talk a lot about, that is promoting our international status, making sure that we have an art museum that appeals to the kids in the tenderloin, to the kids all over the city, to the families we have in the city, but also to be special to our international visitors. i think, n.j., your honor, creating -- i think, jay, creating this and branding is a great thing. last year, there was a financial challenges that occurred all over the world. worldwide economic challenges. if the old models of how you depended on certain bonds or going to be challenged, well, of course they became a challenge to our museum. we got together with the city, the board of sup
