this is a wonderful city. part of its beauty is inheritance of being a gateway to all the different viewpoints that happened around the world. i want to thank all of our artists for helping share that with us. through their various art forms and participate through this movement of more voices, more viewpoints, more languages, more different cultures, contributing to the diverse views that we want to have in our city. that is how we established ourselves as an international gateway of the viewpoints of innovation around the world. when you see this, and i hope you come here at night because it is not just the beauty in the daytime, its contribution to what we want to see happen in the evenings as well as for all of our residents and neighbors. this is going to liven the discussion about the contributions of art to our daily lives. thank you for being here. thank you for helping us chr isten this beautiful piece of art. art. oh, my! haa ha ha! ha hha ha! join all of you today to kick off this very important event, the 2012 black history month in our wonderful citycity for the 100%. everybody gets to live in our city and live with dignity. that is what i am going to be doing in all my years is making sure everyone can be here. [applause] we are recognizing the celebrates the spirit of our african-american experience, the contributions that everyone has made to our great city to make sure it is a diversity. that is why i moved here. it is why you moved here. that is why so many of her friends decided it would make their mark here in our city because of our diversity. this year's theme could be no less important. black women and american history and culture. absolutely. and it is particularly poignant that it highlights african- americans experiences through their patriotism, through their labor, leadership, motherhood, intellect, and artistic expression. all of us regardless of ethnic origin or social and economic background have benefited from the contributions of these women. in the american culture, menino of the historical accomplishments of

that means a majority of you need a degree, especially to stay in this wonderful city of san francisco. you need a college degree or a certificate. that is why i decided to get my college degree. it was not only getting my ticket out of cleaning toilets, but it was my ticket out of poverty. my mom could not help me to tell me how to get to college. that is what today is about. we are here to support you, help you understand how to best transition out of high school into college successfully. we need to to take advantage of this day. visit their resources affair. we have workshops happening all day long. all designed to kill to get motivated about attending college -- all designed to help you get motivated about attending college. thank you so much for being here today. we are so happy to have you. we are proud that you are here. we're proud that you will all continue your education. thank you so much. as an asian american born and raised in this wonderful city, i think san francisco concelebrate is like no other city. we're proud to be part of it. asia-pacific american, is time to celebrate our rich history with our employees and the work we do in our community. target has given 5% of its revenue every year. that equals about $3 million every week. education happens to be the cornerstone and heart of target's giving. we have collaborated with several organizations this year to celebrate the month of may, including the asia pacific fund, asian american festival, and the asian american museum. there is a common theme this year around education, honoring students, teachers, and educators. this coming monday, we have partnered with the school district. our employees will be visiting title one schools drop the sunset and richmond neighborhoods donating over 5000 books from local as and authors. each student will receive books. we have a special surprise. one of the authors will join us in doing reading from her newest book. target interesting part of the committee and it is ingrained in o

[laughter] it is a wonderful city, it really is. it is a question of learning to adapt to the local culture. for example, you would never say out loud in miami, i do not know, i think you have to admit that castro has done some good for cuba. [laughter] anyway, what ever you have heard, disregard. it is a great town. we have a new attitude out there. the tourism motto is to come back to miami, we were not shooting at you. [laughter] i want to tell you quickly about my career. i have been a humor writer most of my life. i started out as a regular reporter. i worked at a little leaguer in pennsylvania called the daily local news. very small town paper. not the best edited paper. we once ran a headline that said women would be raped. [laughter] but that is where i got my start in journalism. i was not great at reporting. i was an english major and went into journalism because i wanted to write, but i learned that writing is not the key skill in journalism. talking to people is the key skill. sometimes you have to talk to people who are

just to wade through how does one implement a process like this in a wonderful city like san francisco? and the pc -- epc means educational placement centers. thank you for taking this out of order. we have a 5:00 that we have to get over to that we are actually doing the meeting. we need to be there on time. otherwise, we make everyone late. but we are going to do this by simply talking about what is transitional kindergarten? we will quickly go through that and then dived into the governor's budget and what it has missed, not only for kindergarten, but pre-k. this is important to know because in this county, preschool for all, for the last seven years, has been a really big thing and a lot of effort has been placed into building a sound and robust pre-k. you will see where the governor starts to intertwine tk with pre-k in his may revise. after we put some context to this, we will move to some of the things we have been able to gather from talking to our communities. i see a couple of my parents. i think heather and i must talk every other week. that's the real performance, because when we do that, and we do that with our city money in wonderful places like this park as you see today under construction with rec and park, we have the commitments of our own folks in our city believing this program works for them, a lot of other things take care of themselves. and there is not only hope, there is real progress going on in the city and i am very, very proud of people who have faith in our government to get into these programs and help change their lives. it also makes other announcements that much more significant. as we gain the success of this 34%, we can can now have a dialogue around other projects that are forthcoming and in the works, projects that other departments are excited to bring into this fold, projects that we know will result after we pass the parks fund in november, right, supervisor? yeah. you know because the public now sees there is a direct benefit when our residents work off these wonderful projects that we pass where we're willing to tax ourselves to get the revenue, but we see the actual benefit in the mor
