we're grateful to live in such a wonderful city. i'm an architect and have been with arg architectural resources group since i've moved here in 1992. arg is an architectural firm that helps people realize opportunities in the historic-built environment. i'm an expert in navigating the needs and the issues our clients face with their historic properties. i'm well versed in assessing and applying the secretary of interior standards for the treatment of historic properties. and i believe these historic properties are places of meaning and memories and are important to our community and should be preserved. for over 25 years i have been making culturally significant buildings and sites relevant for future generations. i focus on restoration, rehabilitation and adapted reuse. as well as built on new design, design of new buildings within the sensitive historic context. i understand fully how to embrace change. identifying and celebrating what makes these places special while at the same time accommodating new and contemporary uses. some

[laughter] it is a wonderful city, it really is. it is a question of learning to adapt to the local culture. for example, you would never say out loud in miami, i do not know, i think you have to admit that castro has done some good for cuba. [laughter] anyway, what ever you have heard, disregard. it is a great town. we have a new attitude out there. the tourism motto is to come back to miami, we were not shooting at you. [laughter] i want to tell you quickly about my career. i have been a humor writer most of my life. i started out as a regular reporter. i worked at a little leaguer in pennsylvania called the daily local news. very small town paper. not the best edited paper. we once ran a headline that said women would be raped. [laughter] but that is where i got my start in journalism. i was not great at reporting. i was an english major and went into journalism because i wanted to write, but i learned that writing is not the key skill in journalism. talking to people is the key skill. sometimes you have to talk to people who are

they all want to get in on this great celebration because it's wonderful for our city. i have often said our city and our strength is our international status and we do that with all the sister cities, with all of the flag raisings, but this is kind of new. what i said to our counsel general it's special because it's kind of bringing forth the things that we have done and the things that we enjoy doing and placing it into a recognized celebration that goes for a long time, so i am proud to launch this here in san francisco, and if i may to not only let you know that it's a great honor to have the italian ambassador here in the united states. it's a great honor for it to be proclaimed italian culture day in san francisco. if i may present this to the counsel general. and the diversity of our city is so wonderful. that it could be enjoyed by all people.ration of the lunar new year. yet there will be hundreds of thousands of people there from all walks of life celebrating with us. and i realize that the parade itself is a big deal. while i was growing up. and i realized, i thought about the parade. we are going down kearney street now. but when i was a little kid, believe it or not, that parade went down grant avenue. and could you imagine that parade going down grant avenue with hundreds of thousands of people watching it? it was crazy. then i realized that the parade didn't just start when i was a little kid. but it started in 1860. that's one of the longest going parades in the united states. it's a tradition that i am glad that i am a part of. and that i can celebrate with my colleagues on the board of supervisors and also with the mayor. so once again happy new year. thank you very much. then the entire city, given the supply of createive talent, the whole city could be a revolving work of art. that would be wonderful. that is what black rock city is. why not transpose that to san francisco? i think the city is now looking at doing art paths for that purpose. it would not be hard, given the abundance of -- after so many years in the desert, there is a huge backlog of brilliant art. magnificent piece is done by armies of artists working together. so that is an obvious things that could be instituted. i also pulled him that we did not have any trash cans in our city. we did not really continue that dialogue. [laughter] >> the question that everyone in san francisco is asking now, i'm going to ask you as a formality. are you going this year? have you ever missed one? have you ever wanted to? >> no. [laughter] at one time, i was very much needed -- i am still needed, from time to time. although, if i and my partners have done our job, we should not be needed that much. i am like anyone else out there. it is a big place. it is hyperactive. not only are there 100 things, but they are all happening at one

i am wondering if the city is speaking against at&t's plans for the advocacy and that is good and affects so many seniors and disabled in the state. it's interesting that mr. dufty said that we have an inherent problem with homelessness, and certainly under this system, which is a system he supports we will continue to i have a homeless problem with the foreclosures that we see across this country, the loss and lack of jobs there will be more homeless people. also the immigrant population that are forced out of their countries because of economic and political problems and many times created by the united states will need housing and care. i hope we have advocates come up here and speak for the senior population in this city. i'm a supporter of the senior and disability action group that do a lot of great work in the city. i am a senior, fortunately not disabled in a rent controlled building i have been for the last 20 years. i would like to move. i would like to get into a building that has services when it's tough to move around. they're not there or lines that last for 10, 15 years and

of our lives that we should always have around us, but i think the america's cup will be wonderful for the city because we will be able to watch from the shores, and it is almost as if the san francisco bay area region was created for the america's cup, and i hope it stays with us for many years. i want to see the giants win the world series again, and already with spring training coming up, there's this feeling of exhilaration about the giants again, and i hope that the 49ers stay in the city, and bayview hunters for development is a key part of that. so i'll be making sure we are in communication because i think sports really helps encourage even children and our families to see that athletic and physical activity is so important in healthy lifestyles. >> are there any other issues that concern you that we have not discussed or areas that you plan to concentrate on throughout your remaining term as supervisor? >> some people do not know that we serve on a lot of other committees. i serve on the bay area quality -- air quality management district, and we are trying to clean the air, and there

around this room, think about the events that you have been to in the city hall in this one rotunda or one of the offices and so many wonderfuleart rending speeches and yes, some sad occasions too. all a part of our community and our beautiful city. as you look around this room tonight, what a diverse combination we have. it makes me smile, but it probably doesn't make nebraska smile. we live in a richly diverse city and our elected officials represent it and our events here represent it and the tree lighting should represent it and indeed it does, we call it the tree of hope. and every year we get messages from all over the country and all over the world that are put on origamis and put on this very unique, unusual tree. >> there are many cities that have holiday trees, but no one has the tree of hope. it was started by an organization and now i will have the chance to introduce you to that organization's founder and executive director. who failed to put this in the proper amount of type here. no little things happen. the sound is better, i think that you can hear and i just have to go slowly, they told me, it is my pleasure

story nationally about petey the pig and the family in white stone, queens and the city is trying to take this wonderful pig away from the family and now they may want to even evict the family. the health department says you better get rid of that pig or we're going to dispose of it. petey is an important part of that family. they lost a relative in that family. petey is a legacy and they love this pig. >> anna: they say the pig even goes in bed with the kids, that pigs are a lot cleaner than you think. you mentioned he was the legacy of a lost family member, the brother, or uncle of the children died in a motorcycle accident, we're told. this is not the only family dealing with this. there is also a former -- army veteran who is dealing with the same thing in the same area and she apparently tried to get this pig deemed a therapy animal.

i'm glad because baltimore is also a wonderful city, as well.e, her family, we've got connections all over the country. this is unique because it's east coast west coast, and it's going to be a national pass time for everybody. >> so mayor rawlings-blake, sorry, mayor lee, i'm going to root for the ravens this year. but tell me -- >> thank you. >> tell me, ms. mayor, what do the ravens mean to baltimore? because i have never experienced such crazy, crazy fans and i'm from cleveland. >> yeah. the ravens mean so much to baltimore. the ravens are relentless. we are often underestimated and that's when we shine the best. and, you know, i feel for you from cleveland, but at least you're able to keep the name. the browns. you have to have some sympathy for us. and, again, you know, we're always underestimated, but we always overperform, and i'm really looking forward to hosting mayor lee. we have a great working relationship, we're going to keep it going. >> i'm going to ask you both for predictions. so mayor lee, what do you think the score will be?
