[laughter] but that is where i got my start in journalism. i was not great at reporting. i was an english major and went into journalism because i wanted to write, but i learned that writing is not the key skill in journalism. talking to people is the key skill. sometimes you have to talk to people who are

and the diversity of our city is so wonderful. that it could be enjoyed by all people.ration of the lunar new year. yet there will be hundreds of thousands of people there from all walks of life celebrating with us. and i realize that the parade itself is a big deal. while i was growing up. and i realized, i thought about the parade. we are going down kearney street now. but when i was a little kid, believe it or not, that parade went down grant avenue. and could you imagine that parade going down grant avenue with hundreds of thousands of people watching it? it was crazy. then i realized that the parade didn't just start when i was a little kid. but it started in 1860. that's one of the longest going parades in the united states. it's a tradition that i am glad that i am a part of. and that i can celebrate with my colleagues on the board of supervisors and also with the mayor. so once again happy new year. thank you very much. i am wondering if the city is speaking against at&t's plans for the advocacy and that is good and affects so many seniors and disabled in the state. it's interesting that mr. dufty said that we have an inherent problem with homelessness, and certainly under this system, which is a system he supports we will continue to i have a homeless problem with the foreclosures that we see across this country, the loss and lack of jobs there will be more homeless people. also the immigrant population that are forced out of their countries because of economic and political problems and many times created by the united states will need housing and care. i hope we have advocates come up here and speak for the senior population in this city. i'm a supporter of the senior and disability action group that do a lot of great work in the city. i am a senior, fortunately not disabled in a rent controlled building i have been for the last 20 years. i would like to move. i would like to get into a building that has services when it's tough to move around. they're not there or lines that last for 10, 15 years and

around this room, think about the events that you have been to in the city hall in this one rotunda or one of the offices and so many wonderfuleart rending speeches and yes, some sad occasions too. all a part of our community and our beautiful city. as you look around this room tonight, what a diverse combination we have. it makes me smile, but it probably doesn't make nebraska smile. we live in a richly diverse city and our elected officials represent it and our events here represent it and the tree lighting should represent it and indeed it does, we call it the tree of hope. and every year we get messages from all over the country and all over the world that are put on origamis and put on this very unique, unusual tree. >> there are many cities that have holiday trees, but no one has the tree of hope. it was started by an organization and now i will have the chance to introduce you to that organization's founder and executive director. who failed to put this in the proper amount of type here. no little things happen. the sound is better, i think that you can hear and i just have to go slowly, they told me, it is my pleasure

story nationally about petey the pig and the family in white stone, queens and the city is trying to take this wonderful pig away from the family and now they may want to even evict the family. the health department says you better get rid of that pig or we're going to dispose of it. petey is an important part of that family. they lost a relative in that family. petey is a legacy and they love this pig. >> anna: they say the pig even goes in bed with the kids, that pigs are a lot cleaner than you think. you mentioned he was the legacy of a lost family member, the brother, or uncle of the children died in a motorcycle accident, we're told. this is not the only family dealing with this. there is also a former -- army veteran who is dealing with the same thing in the same area and she apparently tried to get this pig deemed a therapy animal.
