ktvu's claudine wong tells us that the warning is a reminder that fire season has arrived. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. yes, we're in the oakland hills. in just one of the areas gives us an idea of what all the rains we got during the spring have left behind and the fire concerns that we're seeing this morning. this is a notice sent out by the fire department letting the homeowners know. goes all the way up the hill we have lots of neighborhoods up there. inspections are going to go on today. they're going to go around to all the houses and take a look and make sure they have that also important defensible space. they want to make sure they clear all of this out from around their homes. we've been driving through the oakland hills. it's high here. it's higher in other places. this is maybe a couple three feet long. if you have this around your house and a fire breaks out it's going to go straight towards it. fire department says we're going to come around and take a look at how things look around your house. make sure you're taking necessary preca

ktvu's claudine wong joining us live from san jose. she tells us this is happening during a very violent year in the bay area's largest city. claudine. >> reporter: well, the budget crisis hits home this morning for the san jose police department as almost 70 officers are getting ready to turn in their badges this morning as part of the city's effort to close their budget gap. that process expected to get underway in just a couple of hours at the department. emotions are expected to be high. now the union tried through negotiations to save jobs with a new contract. they were able to save hundreds, but they weren't able to save these. and in a letter published in the san jose mercury news today the police union president is blaming city leadership saying they could have done more to keep these officers on the job saying the mayor and the majority of the council chose to "shut their eyes, cross their fingers and hope for the best." adding to the already tough times san jose's homicide rate which is at 28 this year on pace the union presi

claudine wong is live. >> reporter: certainly a very difficult time. certainly the firefighter family already lost one of their own. they continue to have vigil along with family members here at san francisco general. on the fourth floor right now firefighter anthony valerio is still fighting for his life. his family says they got the call he had been hurt. his parents came down from vacaville and all the while driving down here on the phone that a firefighter had been killed. when they got here they found him alive but in what they call pretty bad condition. family members say he's not breathing on his own. they say he is never alone. valerio is the oldest of seven and his parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews are all holding vigil. they don't know if he can hear them but they tell him any way to pull through. and they get through this difficult time with humor. >> we are cracking a lot of jokes. i think it's how he would want us to be right now. i think he feels that energy from us being silly and hopefully that is helping. >> reporter: flags are fl

ktvu claudine wong is joining us live. she is in san francisco with what people she talked to this morning were saying about all of this. claudine. >> reporter: certainly people have strong opinions, dave. i also have calls into lawmakers this morning as we try to get more information about what governor jerry brown will be proposing today. we expect more cuts to be in this budget proposal. sacramento tries to search for that. a multiple law -- he will present that budget top state democrats today. it is expected to include deeper cuts to the states programs. a worse case scenario if he doesn't get the sales and income tax extensions he's been wanting for so long now. democrats did not specify if the alternative plan would require any republican support. many are predicting it won't. simply because he met with democrats today but not republicans. certainly cuts are not easy. we have been talking to people in san francisco this morning about what they would cut. all admitted that is not an easy question. >> you can't cut an

ktvu's claudine wong has been covering this case since the very beginning. and claudine you have new video tied to this incident. >> reporter: yes. we were here the morning our cameras caught the paramedics who left the scene. this lawsuit that's just been filed at alameda county superior court deals with oscar grant shooting. it is filed by a paramedic who we should note was not here that morning but who has questioned the care that oscar grant received after he was shot on january 1, 2009. now we want to show you video from the scene that morning. now this lawsuit was filed by sean who is an oakland fire paramedic. he has said that he doesn't know exactly how many people responded to the scene and doesn't know how long the care took to get to officer grant, but he has claimed that he's asked for an investigation into the care that grant received and he said because of his request that the investigated he's been retaliated against and that is part of the reason he's filing this lawsuit now in alameda county superior court. we found some youtube video of him

ktvu's claudine wong tells us what happened in the ocean waters right near san francisco's cliff house. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. yes, we're at ocean beach. this rescue happened just hoursing a just offshore from where we're standing. victims saying that things got dicey very, very quickly and certainly they're very glad the coast guard came to their aid. they are doing well this morning. we want to show you video from the scene moments after the three victims were brought to shore in sausalito. three men came down for a crab fishing trip. there weren't any serious injuries in this. one man taken to marin general hospital with possible hypothermia and injured knee. the other two deemed just fine. they had some scary moments. one of the vicinity ims describes what happened. >> we just rolled, the gear shifted on the deck and the pilot took a roll. boat went over and wouldn't come back. >> we just got a call three people went in the water clinging to the hull somewhere out of the golden gate bridge. we launched our vessels and searched that location and foun

ktvu's claudine wong joins us from police headquarters to tell us why this news comes at a scary time for san jose. claudine. >> reporter: well, good morning, pam. certainly this is not a day that the san jose police department has been looking forward to. this morning 68 police officers are waking up knowing that in just hours they're going to be coming here to the san jose police department to turn in their badges. it's something the union president is say tag is the most dangerous thing that san jose could do. as we all know san jose is facing a difficult budget crisis at this point. and the battle has had a lot of twists and turns and officers agreeing to a new contract that saved hundreds of jobs but could not save these. in an opinion letter this morning the union president blames city leadership. when you consider san jose's homicide rate is on pace to pass a 30 year high, he maintains the city can no longer proactively protect citizens and says "all i can say to the major, council majority and city manager is this. you were warned whatever ill befalls san jose next is your own

ktvu claudine wong congress is in antioch this morning with where the investigation stands now. claudine. >> reporter: residence are concerned, firefighters are frustrated these fires keep happening. you can smell these fires. the most recent one 12 hours ago. there are several burn areas. five fires within the last two weeks. this is a grassy area. all of these fires are pretty close to homes. one of these over here pretty close to an electrical tower that sits along the hillside. now this is an issue that keeps coming up. we talked to a resident that says it keeps coming up every single summer. if you look at how close it came, it came within feet of the fences to these homes over here. this happened around 7:30 last night. we want to show you video of the scene as the fire was under way. these have not been big fires. firefighters say with budget cuts resources are thin. and when they have to come out here over and over again it's frats straiting. >> this is the fifth fire we've had in the last last few weeks. >> reporter: you are looking at video from a fire last week. one o

claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. >>> 7:02. family members of missing bay area nursing student michelle le have brought in some extra help hoping 20 find her alive. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us live to tell us they've hired a private investigator. >> reporter: gearing. michelle l -- good morning. michelle le went missing a few months ago. the family announced yesterday they have hired a private investigator. this investigator will be working completely independently of the hayward police department and the fbi. both of those agencies are also involved in the investigation and the search for michelle le. she was last seen may 27th, leaving kaiser medical center where she was taking classes as a nursing student. now, they organized a volunteer search party. more than 400 volunteers combed through the east bay. they went to niles can up-- niles canyon. hayward police are investigating this as a possible homicide. but le's family says they've not seen any evidence of that. let's go live to claudine wong. claudine? >> reporter: we found a lot of cameras here and oscar grant's uncle and son people who wanted to see him get out -- and some people who wanted to get out. he's a free man. nobody watched it happen. that's because this was not a typical release. we never her saw him -- we never saw him. his attorney said there were enough safety concerns. i asked about what is next for mehserle. he said looking forward to getting a job and getting on with his life. >> reporter: does he have any plans to contact the grant family? >> his plans are to wait and see what level of -- shall we say interest and anger is up in the bay area. i nope johannes wants to -- i know johannes wants to talk to the grant family. but there's a civil suit and i'm not so sure it's a good idea to talk with the grant family until that is settled. >> reporter: now, oscar's uncle was here overnight. >> you don't want -- i don't want any discussion with him. but i want him to know i will be apart of his life the rest of his life.

now let's go to claudine wong. >> reporter: firefighters and police officers have been coming here to san francisco general this morning for the ongoing vigil for firefighter anthony valerio. when they are here they are met with the critical response team. the team that mobilized right after this tragedy. i talked to one member of that team. he talked about the bonds. >> the bonds are incredibly tight. the fire department has a very strong brotherhood and sister hood. i don't think there is a stronger bond than cops and firemen. something like this brings us closer to together. there is a lot of you know words that don't need to be said but you know just a glance, a look into another firefighters eyes and that says a lot. >> reporter: they drove in and flew in to be by his side. his family is known for his humor. they are surviving this difficult time by leaning on each other and telling him every own -- him over and over that he needs to pull through. >> his lungs are injured. his body snot quite taking as much -- is not taking quite as much oxygen as it should. trying to keep him co

claudine wong joins us live from san francisco. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. that budget likely to have lots of cuts as we struggle toward a balanced budget proposal. in the meantime lawmakers not happy in sacramento because their budget got vetoed it means they will not get paid. their balanced budget wasn't balanced after all. saying there were too many things in it that didn't add up. it's basically a math problem. but certainly lawmakers are mad. another day means another $4,000 they will not be getting. that money here and gone if they don't get their paychecks coming in. certain reaction in sacramento is not happy from lawmakers. state controllers say their math did not add up. >> we looked to make sure they crossed their t's and dotted their i's and their math did not add up. >> reporter: so what happens now? well, every day they don't have a balanced budget is every day they do not get paid. about $400 or so. about $50,000 a day total in savings for california. the state controllers office is gett
