brentwood, westwood and then along the 101 sherman oaks, woodland hills. unities as they wake up today, how under threat are those neighborhoods? >> reporter: they're under very serious threat, will. and you make a great point. so it's crestwood hills is an area we just were which is near brentwood. we know that that there have been a little bit of burning of homes, but the fire fighters have sort of waited so the landscape, as we talked about, is just match box. as the fires come down a canyon and the vegetation, but it buttresses up against these densely-populated areas, brentwood. and the fear that a you point is so important, and that is we're hearing on the local radio of additional closures along the 405. you can't get off on exits anymore because it is those dense areas that are under the greatest threat at this hour. and should that fire and these winds pick up and that fire get into those dense areas, it could even spill over on the other side of the 405 which is populated on both ends, and then we're back into a situation like we saw a few days ag

a new one just began a short while ago in and around the woodland hills area. that's moving pretty fast. mandatory evacuations associated with that one. i'm altadena which is 25 miles east of the palisades, east of the pacific coast highway. and you could see all of the destruction here. it gives you an idea of how widespread the fire damage is all across l.a. county. i just spoke with a gentleman whose home has been reduced to rubble, what is on your screen right now. he said he grabbed his father's military flag and that was it because he thought he would come back to a home. but he said he has lost everything and, of course, there is a countless number of these stories all across l.a. county right now you could see the smoke the fires all around us in the altadena area today. natural gas still pouring out of some of these properties. we are hearing booms in the distance. the fire here in the altadena area grew substantially today. to 13,000 acres. 4,000 to 5,000 structures impacted here. fema was in the palisades area. they will be here in the altadena area
