wood. now, because i am going to get a little bit of squeeze out here i'll wipe it off with a rag. but since i've already stained it, the stain is in the wood and it will not make a blotchy corner. of course, i'll put a good finish on this later. see my fancy jig here? it's just a square-cut board clamped down with a holdfast. and then back here, here's another piece that's... held in place. and when i bring this corner up on tt board, just li that, see how the corner mates and is nice and tight? and the other thing i like to do is use a rubber mallet and my body to hold this corner in place right there. get everything all lined up. it's not a matter of force to clamp that corner, 'cause i'm letting that angle do its work. if it's cut correctly, all i do right now is bring it flush right in here. and then i'll use a brad nailer to tack the corner together -- just like that. this an 18-gauge brad nailer. and once that draws that corner tight, then i don't have any marring. because it's so sm

those are wood stairs in a wood structure. much better solution. they're also protected because they're inside. so they're not going to have as much of a problem. they still have a joint there which is a leak problem that has to be caulked. this is sort of an interesting exercise. as you walk down the street i want to you look at the buildings carefully and see if you can see the space between the buildings in san francisco. and here we have a space that's about 3 fourth of an inch or an inch or something like that -- 3/4 of an -- 3 fourth of an inch or an -- 3/ of an inch or an inch, or something like that. you do a roof and your neighbor does a roof and you put a piece of flashing between the building and that keeps water out of that space between the buildings. water gets down there between the buildings and it's extremely difficult to repair dry rot inside that space. you have to take the inside wall out to get to it. we also see a couple of other things happening here. we see a down spout from a drain and those need to just be checked to make

um, what wood are you using for these? pear wood.ey're made of oak, but the-- the big pieces are made of oak. yeah, but you can't reproduce oak in close scale. it's too big so you use pear wood which is the best wood to use. so, are you a professional making these? no, i'm--i was a woodworker all my life. i was a patter maker. oh, really? but, uh, i'd never made anything as intricate or small as this. but it looks fascinating because that-- i now understand why these are such high quality. because if you're a pattern maker, they really are-- it's one of the most precise jobs ever, wasn't it? yes, very precise. you had to be very good, and that shows here, which is now a hobby. yes. fantastic. well, i think these are so charming. just let me compare this to here. we've got a really good sort of james i early 17th century oak armchair of lovely proportions. i daresay there's a bit of fiddling around. but, from what i can see here all this carving is absolutely right-- genuine, not victorian, carving. and i love this guilloche molding h
