i had the honor of teaching at hd woodson high school for 13 years. i went there in 1990. thought that would last a year teaching 12th grade american government. i was so taken away by my students and their perseverance and their refusal to give up but seeing daily the additional types of support systems they need in their life, that any young person needs in teir life. resources, access to information, pathways so they can move forward in a way that really best fits their life. so there was a very intense combination of inspiration and frustration going on. so quite a few years into that pross, i put on what i thought would be truly a one- day three on three charity basketball tournament that i named after the documentary "hoop dreams" that came out at the time and the story of those two young men resonated with a lot of the young men that i was teaching and their challenges and struggles. from that moment in '96 i haven't really come up for air. now we're nearly 14 years ater. what we've done is we built a very organically grown grassroots organization that has now helpe

[applause] a name that is often associated is miss daisy bates. some of us may not realize she was not a student who for dissipated in the desegregation of the little rock schools. she was the president of the naacp branch in little rock at the time this activity occurred. we have with us today five of the original nine participants who were identified as the little rock nine. they are mr. ernest green,
woodson, jackie robinson, marian anderson, paul robeson, rosa parks, thurgood marshall, ralph bunche,r. benjamin ways, over winfrey, and dr. martin luther king jr.. so clearly this award has been given to luminaries from a variety of appeals who have made very significant accomplishments of to society and the world. we have a collection of previous recipients of the war. i would like to give a very brief introduction to them -- recipients of the award. the introductions work -- are not in...

housing policy in the united states since back in the day when bob woodson and i were in the vineyards in the early '80s and tony was, as well, with jack kemp, housing policies always had a bias toward more people owning houses in the federal government and that started out by having interest deductible and expanded over the years to where really now the federal government controls well over 95% of every home loan in the country. and those incentives, people react to those incentives and we've tried to make it easier and easier for people to own houses at all income groups. at some level, maybe that was a reasonable policy. but people react to incentives. it was government policy that drove the concentration of investment assets into residential mortgages and the packaging of them given by tax policy and regulatory policy and it was government policy that made an exception to a 75-year-old rule, which was the capital standards for broker/dealers and exempted the top five dealers from the normal leverage ratio and that is an example of government policy and how it it skews outcomes. so
