woodson initiated the first negro history week, celebrating -- selecting a week in february that includedinent roles in a particular aspect of black history, the quest to end slavery. the era of the first negro history weeks was one of massive change for black americans. many of whom had fled dire living conditions in the south for factory jobs in the north, where they soon would find themselves in sometimes ugly battles for available blue collar jobs with white ethnic immigrants from parts of europe, like italy and ireland and germany. the harlem renaissance was in full swing and soon the jazz age would be too, creating an era of epic black cultural achievement. and yet racism touched nearly every aspect of black life. and soon would come the anti-lynching movement, that led to the civil rights movement, and eventually the passage of the civil rights and voting rights acts. president gerald ford officially recognized black history month in 1976, the year of america's bicentennial. i was still in elementary school where denver public schools would bus us to this downtown program that enco

and our programs -- kind of like what miss woodson was describing, the people that had information and knowledge about naloxone and how to prevent overdoses was the ones we contacted and said yes, i'm going out there and doing this and that. even those people were using cocaine and they were not tolerant to opiates to the overdoses happened with contaminated cocaine. so test strips became important for that group. so they're talking to people they offered to open their doors and talk to anybody who comes there. and one of those programs is a program that specifically serves black and african american people. >> supervisor haney: can i get your perspective? i mean, exiting two people from all of the shelter-in-place hotels, which have had thousands of people in them, what is happening there? does that seem low to you, right to you? is there a process where we are working with people who are inside environments like shelters or navigation centers or shelter-in-place hotels and helping them identify more long-term placements like we heard from today like with the city? it seems to me ther

in 1926, carnegie woodson and the association african-american life and history launched negro week to promote the study of african-american history as a discipline to celebrate the accomplishments of african-americans. although we made progress in our efforts to reach and every san francisco unified district students, there's gaps and experiences and outcomes for african-american students in our district, city and country. we're proud that there are many examples of how students, staff, school sites and school community in san francisco are uplifting the achievements and history of black americans all year and especially during the month of february. i have the honor of visiting with the students of sherman elementary this morning and interviewed by them and reading to them. glad to have the opportunity to celebrate with them. last week i had the opportunity to celebrate with the students at carter. many of our schools, all of a our schools are celebrating in different ways. another way is our 27th annual african-american honor roll celebration. it will be next week, february, 16, 17
