with us live tonight to talk about this, former cia director james woolsey who is also an adviser to the trump campaign. director woolsey, is the president-elect wrong to so openly dismiss the findings of his incoming intelligence community? >> i think that the statements that have come out of the government on this conflate to two very different things and that's the source of the confusion. the soviets before them and the russians for the last number of years have a major program called disinformation, otherwise known as lying big time. and they use it to go after what they consider to be the bastions of western values such as judism, the catholic church, political institutions that sponsor democracy and the like. they may well be using their disinformation campaign to attempt to discredit one or both political parties in the united states as they do with some european parties. >> but he's saying these specific reports are awrong, he doesn't believe that they messed with our election. >> it isn't necessarily the case if they were using their disinformation campaign, as i think they

woolsey. what you're describing as the complexity and what you want to be careful not to do is very much in conflict with what we're hearing from the man you advise, the president-elect of the united states. he does not want to be bothered with the complexity that you're talking about. he's saying this is simple. they're bad, keep them out. >> it depends on who they are. for example, i don't know of any restriction that would prohibit one from banning all immigration from say syria. it's a tough and perhaps an unwise approach but i don't see any constitutional problem with it. whereas banning muslims from immigrating into the united states may run into conflict, problems with the first amendment. i think you need some good legal brief writing to figure out where you stand on that. >> how do you explain his coming to such a different conclusion than your own with respect to what law he has to respect and whether it makes sense? >> i have advised four presidents, two republican and two democrati

quickly, i agree with ambassador woolsey.e doing, intelligence to economics, and i think that's what mr. trump is looking at doing. let me be clear on this. if you read the article clearly, the "post" article, the source of this commentary saying the fbi supports it, it's not the fbi saying it backs up the cia director. it's the cia director, john brennan, in an internal memo at this is disinformation. john brennan is playing disinformation game. so let me be very clear on this. i think we need to look at how, if the russians did it, we do things to hurt them effectively. link intelligence to economics. i think that's what we need to do. with that said, i'm not convinced the russians did it. julian assange says they got it from an insider. the bottom line is, nobody's denying the content of those e-mails. i would be horrified to think the american people should reject truthful information if we don't know the source. as long as it's true, we recollected accept -- we should it. >> thank you for joining us today. >>> all right.
