down at woolworth's. we closed down the university. then, from there, we sat down. we could not leave. they threw pies at s. from there, we got jailed three times. the dogs were put on us. the fire hoses. all this in new orleans, louisiana. we met with dr. king. he came to our church. he was beaten. you could see that on television every night where the ministers were beaten trying to get people to vote down in new orleans and baton rouge. when i came down here, the same thing was going on. we went to san francisco state university to get my credentials and my master's degree. we had to close the school down to get to ethnic studies. the police marching on us at san francisco state. after leaving new orleans and coming here, it was still a fight. comparing the schools, yes, i can see the different -- i can see the difference. those parents are there, and they bring in money for those schools, and they have all kinds of book fairs and arts festivals, computer labs, and at hunters point, it is a whole different story. you do not have a computer labs there. we do not h

a lot of our consumers were denied the right to be at the warlords countered -- woolworth counter.somehow we were demonstrating our solidarity for sticking it to someone by saying okay now i'm going to shop with you. you wouldn't let me shop with you but now i'm shopping with you but in so doing they are banning the business owners who depended on that money before so we went out in droves to support those businesses that hadn't let us support them before but when we did that we left our guys out. those businesses grew from our consumer dollars and after that those businesses started to recognize the value of the lack dollar so the next wave that crippled our entrepreneurial spirit and siphoned so much wealth from our community was especially in my generation, our generation, the point was get a good job and he -- in a big white company. that is what i was trained to do and that was the goal. that would make your parents go to sleep better. get a great white job at a great white company. other groups, the goal is to be an entrepreneur and continue the family business. we lost that

rights movement as a member of the naacp and as a college student participated in a boycott of a woolworth's store in support of the desegregation of the lunch counters in the south. during that time dr. king came to our college and i had the honor to briefly meet him. my direct involvement in the civil rights movement is limited, there are many former and current members who have unique and inspirational stories to share about the historic is the 65 marches and -- 1965 marches and the civil rights movement. we have the honor of serving with representative john lewis, for example, who just spoke and who is an icon of the civil rights movement. and i have been lucky enough to hear him speak to student groups and others about his experiences as he led the fight for racial and voter equality. it's important that accounts such as his be preserved in the historic record so they can be shared for years to come. i believe it's important to keep the history and heritage of the civil rights movement alive by collecting and sharing these oral histories with the american public. mr. speaker, i support
