the first shift today workers are supposed to start to arrive at 6:30. so far according to the unioners have crossed the picket lines. there is about 178 unionized organizers. the strike is over health care benefits. right now the company pays into into a union trust fund. that pays for the union workers health care benefits. the company wants to stop paying into that trust fund and have the workers go on their own health care insurance. that will require the unions pay a deductible one union representative said is worth thousands of dollars. what does that mean to the workers? one worker said the plan being offered by the company now means that if they took that plan, her son would be without health care. >> my son is a student and on the plan he has right now he's covered. under the new plan he's not covered. so we want to cover our family. >> reporter: the union says and some of the workers say there has never been a strike here. a lot of the organizers say they -- a lot of the workers here say they love working here. one i talked to said 24 years, one has worked here 15 years. in

workers who were there. and you know as i mentioned the unions weren't in support this time around so we're known what did you see did you see. a lot of disagreements between some of the workers there at the poor and the protestors and you asked the protesters why it is that they want to target the ports. right well i mean there was disagreement but i think that in many ways it's played up a little bit more. longshoremen's union said that they were not in support of this but that was the upper leadership of the union there were letters written from rank and file members who said that they do support but obviously they couldn't walk off the job for you know fears of you know being punished for that within the crowd we saw teachers we saw there were other workers who were part of the union so definitely the fact that unions said that they did support it. helped encourage some people to come out but they obviously did not show their numbers the numbers would have likely been much larger had those union members come out now now that we saw that they were able to do a partial shutdown we'll see what the unions do
