and we should be looking more in san francisco about workforce housing.when we talk about middle income, your employees are not middle income. your employees are low to moderate income earners. they're mainly low earners. if you're making the minimum wage in san francisco, you're not making a living wage and this is why your workers are working two or three jobs. thank you for bringing that up. we know we have minimum wage because we want to hope to raise the viability, the economic stability for the people of san francisco when we know that is just ridiculous when they're making $16, $17 an hour. however, i do think that as we have, as a city somehow created this huge gap and this shortage, and i think that what we should do is make a commitment, not only to be building -- bringing these big companies to san francisco, but also that we have people that can serve the workers of san francisco. i am a fourth generation san franciscan. and there was a time -- you know, you could work a living wage job and you could find a place to rent. you didn't have to sh

they call it workforce housing. and it is tough to get any help for it. why? >> a number of reasons. one is california tax policy does not reward the construction of homes. especially those homes that we are referring to here here. prop 13 issues and other issues, you are actually penalized as a city if you are building homes. you are awarded for a big box retail. >> you are also rewarded or pushing for big-box apartments. the idea is to put a lot of people in a small amount of space in order to hit our climate change goals as well. and our transit goals. and even just sharing one wall with a neighbor rather than three is almost looked down upon these days. >> it is fascinating because we are trying to address multiple challenges. in the bay area, we call then the issues because they are linked. traffic and housing are like the flip side of the same coin. we do have to be careful. as we build homes, that we are building better communities and that does mean addressing more traffic. >> the goal is to build more and then you have everyone's definition of buildin
