last year we were able to organize about 18 workshops throughout san jose with all of our high schoollege higher ed partners here in the san jose area. this year we have about 25 workshops that we'll be offering from down south -- as far down south as san benido as far as san jose. >> we'll give you a website and a couple phone numbers for you to call in case you want to know where these workshops are. so i know i'm just going to throw this at you, but a family of four, they need to be making what to qualify? any idea what? where does the line go at this point? >> it is -- it is very much dependent on the personal financial family status, and really we don't try to give a specific number for a magic number. there really isn't. there's so many variables that are taken into consideration once the family submits the application. all of the family income, assets and other types of, you know, income resources that need to be reflected in the application. it's a family by family basis. even if students feel like or families feel like they may not qualify because they may feel like they earn

and -- when we started discussions about this think bike workshop. we did this in other cities in the u.s. and we will be in that other big california city, los angeles, in a few other days. thursday, and -- thursday and friday. and i was convinced quite easily about the use to have these kind of work shops in l.a. but i thought san francisco, there's so much going on already. we had leah and for almost nine months in amsterdam and chairman david chiu and others for a week. and there is such great organization here and there are so many ideas. there are so many professional little here already about bike infrastructure and the future of biking. but it will come down to implementation and it's perhaps a bit like riding the wiggle. you have to push hard and hopefully we might be a sort of additional support, a sort of small electricity motor for you to push your -- up that hill. and it will come down to implementation and leadership and it's great to have a sort of down to earth approach during these two days. working in teams on i think three importan

these workshops were led by you for your alumni. they facilitated the trainings and help to create the curriculum for the trainings. you if warriors then utilize their newly learned skills to lead you to advocacy day here in city hall on wednesday april 6, an historic day of youth civic engagement when high-school students met with their elected officials to talk about the issues they care about. on youth advocacy day, you for years led interactive workshops with high school students and city government and also help students prepare for their meetings with elected officials. they met with officials from some various departments, members of the board of supervisors, and mayor edwin lee. mayor li was gracious enough to address all of the participants. he shared his history and inspiring words about the importance of youth in city politics. i am happy to share with you today that mayor lee is here to help celebrate youth warriors. kerny street workshops began as a community teaching space inside the international hotel. after the evictions they relocated but kept their name and community spirit. during the 80's and 90's ksw curated the american jazz festiv festiv festival. it's gallery feature artists and host of the annual ground breaking festival. they remain within the community. kerny street is still home with people can express what it means to be asian american. >> we are celebrating or 35th anniversary. in august we were founded in 1972. there are 3 founders. there was not a lot of original art work coming out of china town they wanted to provide incentives for development and create expressions they opened in in the international hotel in manila town and the first the programming was a lot of workshop and silk screening and sewing, music and visual arts and different kinds of performance. in the 70's ksw was involved in the actions going to the actions and when they were being evicted from the hotel they were protesting and it was that kind of action. it's evolved a lot from that from the 70'

the student strikes the workshop system and one unforgettable struggle that captured the attention ofation the fight against e visions at the international hotel. >> it was horrifying experience where it was bloody and violent. >> [inaudible] on kaerny street a 10 block community where many filipinos lived. in the 1910th and the 20's and 30's. there were night clubs and restaurants and small businesses. it was a lot of the [inaudible] many of them who came in the earlier time they called it home. at the time and the international hotel struggle happened, it was right on kerny and jackson. that was the last building, the last block of manila town that was standing. san francisco at the time was going through a period you know, where there was redevelopment they were expanding to the western edition. they were tearing down a lot of communities. at the same time it was a time when a lot of asian americans were becoming more aware of our heritage and the conditions of our communities. and that basically created, sort of a, sort of a back drop for the hotel struggle. >> the struggle began
