there are world class cities throughout this country and throughout the world that are already doing it and i think that san francisco is lagging behind and one of the reasons that i as a gay man came to san francisco because of the entertainment nightlife that we have here. i think there is a way of promoting that and still maintaining public safety which is always the excuse to not do it. >> larry? >> as an operator of a late night venue already i can tell you that having late night service would certainly contribute to public safety. i know my business stays open often until 4 a.m.. we have a trickle out of patrons as opposed to many of businesses have a dumping of patrons. my patrons don't all dump out and have interaction and conflict unlike other businesses. i think that's a very good point. >> mr. rene? >> i was involved the first time we tried this 4 a.m. legislation in sacramento whether it was mother's against drunk driving and our patrol showed up with crying mothers. but forget world class cities, it's kind of embarrassing when indianapolis and memphis and milwaukee and 2

but for a world-class city to have this status as one of the best cities to live in, and work in and visit. you have to have a police force that rises to world-class standards. and the san francisco police department is world-class standard. tonight with the recognition of the medals of valor, we continue, i think, a very important culture. a culture that is measured by the performance of its officers and those who tonight exceed that standard in every way. and you know, it's kind of hard for me to get to know everyone up to 2,000 officers that work in our police department. i do see the results though. and i don't think we could have landed the bid for the super bowl hosting50 without a world class department. we could not have landed the americus cup in san francisco, without the signaling of the best police department in the country. we could not have landed so many of these world-class events and continue the pride of being one of the fastest recovering cities in all of our country without a good police force. and so i made it a point tonight to come here and to let you know, i ma

dpw again for the giant sweep campaign that they are doing and again reminding people we are a world class city. we ought to have that world class attitude. you look at some of the cities across the country i have had the opportunity to travel through. the streets are very clean and get reminded that we all have to contribute in every part of our city. that same attitude in every city is the last point i want to make today. june 6, almost 10 days ago, there was a very bad incident that occurred. a shooting occurred of someone firing into one of our buses. as horrible as that is, and we can talk all day long, everything from gun violence to violence in itself to youth violence, we are doing everything we can to prevent that. while we are doing that in the community, there are individuals that want to cease the moment and make our community safe. on that particular day, rather that run away from the incident, there was concern for a passenger on one of our munis buses and the driver acted very responsely that they got out of harms way and drove to the hospital to get attention to one of the passe

this is in fact a beacon for our arts community, for a world class city and it has the ability to attract some $50 million of contributions to our economic vitality a huge base of fans that will visit our city. there is going to be 150 million visitors, i think it's going to be $97 million contribution to our committee already scaled by our travel association. so part of it is economics, but i actual, without even having those numbers in front of me knew that this was going to excite us. i actually know that when we unveil this tonight, the feeling that i'm going to be having, is we just won another world series because it's going to bring that kind of excitement into city. and to have this timed in a way in which we have just finished the 75th anniversary of the celebration of the bay bridge, we have opened the auditorium and on our bay for the first time we have just finished the world series and the 55 sealing on our bay is a celebration for san francisco and this incredible rebounds that this city is experiencing can really only be complimented by the arts, because allows the arts to
