[ applause ] . it's only been two-and-a-half years since the moment of conception of this idea. it's an amazing tribute to our community. it reached three levels of impossibility, of getting a permit and designing it and putting it on this structure and the impossibility of getting it funded. it really is a tribute to so many and a lot of faces that i'm looking at this room tonight. it comes down to as always people. i'm going through a few moments here to give a real thanks to people who made this night and the next two years possible. i'm going to list a couple of company names, but i want to think of them as members of our community that made this project possible. that included, bloomberg, guchie, it includes the partners, magazine, california home and design, magazine, aluminum illuminary sponsors and the folks tonight. and, you know t

but having a world-class hospital treat you, is what we expect and come to expect in this world-class city. but there are also people that work in addition, to the emergency staff that aren't being recognized today and i want to give a south out to john cat he and officer david sand volunteer of the police department because they are doing prefix work because they know, they know along with our police chief and all the others that if we prevent people from getting injured if we can get them into lifestyles that are safer, we will be that much more successful as a city and they are doing that with gang prevention and motivation and aspiration for the youth getting them jobs as officers in a capacity outside of their uniform that is a wonderful thing. were the to give a shout out to doctor row chair oh, vickier. [spelling?] yes, she is a hero because, she is also trying too make sure that the none-violate lifestyle is taught when people visit the hospital can they get some injury prevention vice and making that are we can prevent those injury and is then of course, there are these culturally

this is a world-class city. and because it is, we require a world-class police department. and by golly, with chief suhr and the commission, we have it with you, the men and women of the police department. and i can vouch with this, having hatraveled as mayor brow and witnessing all the other cities and what they are going through. there extreme jealousy of our city. we get the best people that live here and work here and a part of this great teamwork we are building in san francisco. and not just what we are presently doing. but building for the future. and in working for the chief and the police officers association. we have already established a six-year hiring plan. many cities across the country haven't figured out how to do that. we have did so. this january i was so proud to see 43 additional officers graduate from the police academy. how long ago have we seen that happen. we are investing in you, the police department. because we know that if we have a successful police department, one that is growing, and one that incurs faith and confidence from residents and frie

this is in fact a beacon for our arts community, for a world class city and it has the ability to attract some $50 million of contributions to our economic vitality a huge base of fans that will visit our city. there is going to be 150 million visitors, i think it's going to be $97 million contribution to our committee already scaled by our travel association. so part of it is economics, but i actual, without even having those numbers in front of me knew that this was going to excite us. i actually know that when we unveil this tonight, the feeling that i'm going to be having, is we just won another world series because it's going to bring that kind of excitement into city. and to have this timed in a way in which we have just finished the 75th anniversary of the celebration of the bay bridge, we have opened the auditorium and on our bay for the first time we have just finished the world series and the 55 sealing on our bay is a celebration for san francisco and this incredible rebounds that this city is experiencing can really only be complimented by the arts, because allows the arts to

the public art speaks volumes of san francisco as a world-class city with world-class art and culture. for more information, visit >> hello. welcome to "culturewire." we are here today with bay area artist jody chanel, and we are here to see the plaza where your piece has just been installed. >> i have been doing large-scale paintings in the galleries and museums, and the idea that in the future, i could do something that would hang out a little bit longer than the duration of the installation the kind of appeal to me. i quickly found out about the san francisco arts commission school and realized there was a pre-qualified school you had to apply to, so i applied to the. >> how long did it take you to develop this work for the plaza? >> this was a fast track project. design development was about a month. >> let's look at the beautiful mural. i have never seen a mural created on asphalt. >> the heat of the asphalt, a new layer of asphalt. then, these wire rope templates that were fabricated for the line work get laid down and literally stamped into the asphalt, and then everything was

to be a city that i know mayor brown had tried all this year to continue being which is the world class city for everybody. and this is what i know that willie has done. all of his years, i think that his history is quite clear, not only to everybody in this room for anybody who works within this building knows that every detail of government, whether it is shining the brass in these elevators, to people who work here and the standards upon which they should be serving the public, to great department heads and all of the things that they do to continue the success of this city. mayor brown, has done all of it. and he has paid attention to every detail and i am still catching up to learn, but it is. even to be close to what he has been trying to do and of course, especially this year with the trials and tribulations of i suppose any mayor in their first elected year goes through, you know, i take a lot of things personally and i must always go back and say, willie, did this happen to you? >> and, of course, getting the great advice that is absolutely necessary, because, when you sit in this s
