the french construction company and the british advertising giant wpp are among those who say their i.t. systems have been struck by a virus demanding money in exchange for access to data. it is a similar attack to the virus that claimed thousands of victims. to talk more about that i'm joined of new york by an internet security expert. thank you for joining us. is this virus spreading so rapidly and how much damage can it do? is a ransom ware attack spreading because it was designed to spread. it is a type of malware that criminals in fact machines with an demand a payment to free the day that they have locked. this was highly successful in the past. they are making a lot of money. >> what kind of damage do these programs do? some pretty big targets here. the chernobyl nuclear plant in the ukraine, a british war strip -- warship. what is the risk here? >> the risk is you could lose access to your data. thankfully criminals do restore it if you pay the ransom. not all do. some may lose their data. the other thing is this may have been designed in such a way that it can propagate without

government agencies falling victim to yet another rant somewhere hack attack, including the likes of wpp a pharma giant. more than 80 companies in russia and ukraine were initially struck by the petya virus that disabled users and told them to pay $300 in crypto currency to unlock it. joining us now, mcafee ceo chris young. your researchers have been looking into this. what have you discovered? guest: we have discovered that the real story here is the evolution of rent somewhere. we did see a global rent somewhere attack, but the way we have seen this attack work is we have gone from single instances where users were get fished, to now hybrid attacks where this rent somewhere attack used and exploit we saw in the proper -- in the attack we saw a few weeks ago, but it is now using new x to go -- new exploits after credentials and attack machines that are necessarily unpatched, which was the case .ith wannacry -- with wannacry they now are affecting entire networks. that's what we started to see with wannacry, and we are seeing the next step of the evolution with petya. emily: what should

malwea known as petya the disruption spread to several european companies including maersk, merck, wpp and rosneft arjun, we've seen this very similar ransomeware attack one month ago. have the companies not learned >> it seems they haven't this ransomeware is nasty. it locks files, different from the wannacry one, this is locking whole hard drives. essentially making the computer unusable the latest tally is 3.5 bitcoins have been paid, so $9,000. not a lot of money the advice is don't pay the ransom because actually you're not going to get your files back there's little evidence of whether this will unlock any of the files at the moment. the researchers are seeing big differences from wannacry. this is a more complicated attack it is stealing user names and log-in details in order to gain access to secure files and instore more of this malware across the network it's a different piece of work here security companies are still scrambling about how to fix it and whether there is a fix >> arjun, thank you very much for that any big plans for your birthday? i har you'ear you're 21 again?
